[Tips]7 Common Mistakes to Avoid in Keyword Research

Nice post cyberzilla on things that beginners need to take into account when first starting out on keyword research and if you target brand names, it's definitely worth checking before jumping in blindly.

Do you care much if the searches are local or global? They say that cpc's are much higher if you set your sites in the local US search results. Sometimes the figures can be bloated too.

I mainly target US visitors so I care about US local search count. Yes, CPC is usually high for US country because they do spend more money online so competition is higher among Adw0rd users. The more they bid, the more we earn for a keyword ;) G0ogle is the only source which we can trust as of now for CPC. If you want to see who is bidding on a keyword and the CPC range, daily budget e.t.c., check SpyFu or KeywordSpy..

just one question how many exact search count you prefer for the keyword to choose and also how do you assess the difficultly level of the keyword to rank. do you also see allintitle, allinanchor, other things

Regarding search count, check this http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/2772443-post237.html and analyzing keyword competition is a different game. There is one good thread posted by IamNRE about keyword research here http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/2772443-post237.html

Another great article Cyberzilla!

There is only one way of guessing how much we earn for each adsense click....that is by going to adwords account

and checking contextual targeting tool

This was mentioned in recent wso adsense revelation

correct me if i am wrong

When you talk about recieiving traffic from other keywords
is it still worth trying to target a decent root keyword and
just get the traffic to the others as a result, or should you
not target a root keyword as much?

Definitely sticky this thread, though perhaps under WH SEO, instead of the Making Money forum.

Actually I'm not aware of that. I will check that. Thanks!

I don't understand..All what I say is apart from your main keyword, target few more long tail keywords related to the main keyword to get extra traffic and revenue.

Thank you all for your feedback guys. Did I miss anything?? Is there any thing which needs to be checked?

Choosing the best keywords like "buying keywords"
thank you very much for this useful post.

A little basic but useful addition:

When researching KWs, make sure your keywords are not 'seasonal'. By seasonal, I mean the ones getting good search count because of some recent even like say 'osama dead pics'... Now people searched that KW like crazy and some folks (including me) made some decent money off it :)
But now even if you are #1 for that KW, you won't be getting much traffic. That is because this Keyword has become 'cold' now...

A good way to see if a KW is 'seasonal' or not is to head over to Google trends and Google Insights. You can easily check the graphs and tell about that KW.

Other than that, you guys should consider this thread to analyse your competition: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...ethod-step-step-keyword-research-newbies.html

Good luck...

Cyberzilla, It's BHW members like you who take their time to write and post guides like this and the Step by Step KeyWord guide by IamNRE, who make BHW a powerful up-to-date place for Internet Marketers.

Thanks and Rep. given - Thank you.

I am curious about how you recommend doing keyword research on a large scale to look at more KWs?

(Chime in IamNRE if you see this :))

Currently what I'm doing is:
1 - Use scrapebox to scrape related keywords with 2-3 runs of scraping at least.
2 - Enter them into market samurai and analyze them with my criteria for KWs.
3 - Then review the best looking keywords from MS manually and directly in G keyword tool.
4 - Then search for EMDs based on those results.

Often though MS is slow and clunky for what I like. Any tips on creating and searching though large lists of keywords to be able to find the valuable ones?

Is there a way to search for EMDs automatically through a program, script, or web based site?

Regards

As of now, there is no tool exist to do all the task in a single shot right from populating huge number of keywords to finding EMD, but I know few people are in the process of developing such tool. I'm a kind of guy who do everything manually and I'm ok with that.

What you are doing right now is fine. I have already posted a thread about this long back http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...h-search-volume-keywords-using-scrapebox.html I suggest you to read that thread because many members shared useful tips over there. Also 'takeachance' shared a custom script to find EMDs in bulk.

1. Exact Search Count

Always look for the exact search count. Initially when you enter a keyword in the search box and hit search, what you get by default is "Broad" search count. Under match types select [Exact] and hit the search button again. That shows the approximate 12-month average of exact user queries for the keyword on Google search.

i think you're making a confusion here. at least it doesn't make sense to me what you're saying.

the way i see things is google can show you 3 types of searches the users make:
1. broad search, which is for ex: buy backlinks
2. phrase, which is for ex: "buy backlinks"
3. exact search, which is for ex: [buy backlinks]

so all these options are the searches the users make w/ quotes and brackets.

on this principle, it makes no sense to go for the exact search, which is very much NOT used by anyone.
webmasters are most likely to know about it, but not regular users. and since you are targeting regular users, why go for the query that webmaster use ?!

since is very much NOT used by people, as most of us make the search by using simple queries, it makes no sense to go after the brackets search.

what the op is saying is like: hey, go for kwds that have high # of searches for intitle: buy backlinks ... lol ... who uses that, right ?... maybe webmasters, but not regular users .. so .. i say stick with the broad search. it makes more sense to go for that, rater than brackets. lol

I repeat, google is showing you the searches number for the keyword, in three different modes:
- simple query,
- qoutes query,
- brackets query.

I very much think you are spreading miss-information with this exact search thing.

So, be aware there newbies and advanced users as i think that the op doesn't make sense at all with his statement and i highly recommend you try to consider what i've just mentioned above.

if the op feels i'm wrong, i'm very much open to a better explanation on his part. arguments that would make things more clear and will prove that i'm wrong on sticking to the broad search.

in others words, get your keywords by using the broad search. that's the searches the regular users do and that's the kind of users you are targeting.
