It is possible that you ran int a batch of brand new domains that were added and not fully configured yet.
As far as a default theme - all domains receive custom theme updates, so we never use standard Wordpress themes. This is not accurate at all nor does it fully depict the wider value of this network. Again, if you ran into a "few" I would estimate that these were new domains on the network.
As for backlinks to the domains - we have SENuke blasting this network, over time the value of all links placed will ultimately increase in value.

Don't say my statement is inaccurate or I will post links to the sites, it is a fact. To say otherwise is a bold face lie. There are absolutely sites in there with default. I was being polite but since you want to act like what I am saying is untrue let me blunt. The sites are complete garbage, all have the exact categories set as archives and horrible articles that don't even relate to the site half the time. I haven't found a single one yet that had a link from any other site.
Of course this is not the only SEO I am doing. I am using different things on different sites of mine plus doing my own work just to see what services are worth paying for to save me time from having to do myself and what ones are not. This one I wouldn't pay $5.00 for.
I tried to email that address for a refund with no luck:
