What can happen by doing a linkwheel, closed or opened, for a new site with just a few hundreds of backlinks?

I know that was a similar talk about this here somewhere, but can't find it anymore.

Depends how you make the blueprint for the linkwheel, but you really need to work hard to make it a problem.

Lets say you have:
20 web tier1
40 web tier2
80 web tier3

Thats 140 different website you need to work on at the same time. Write and post articles, blast them with backlinks etc. That takes you more that one day to complete.

And all you get is 20 direct links to your moneysite, but the linkjuice will be great :)

So I would not be worried. But again - it really depends how you build up your linkwheel. But I would advice you to make a open linkwheel!

Isn't there any risk to spook of google, even with an open linkwheel?

Linkwheel is completely safe as long as this articles you use are unique that google can cache and index them....Topic should be related to your targeted niche this way you gain a lot of good traffic with your wheel, maximizing its capabilities.
Tip: always write something that will help or any way interesting to the reader. Link wheel should not be more than 3 links deep. Well that's how it works for me though but i don't really with the people how they do there style but that should give you a head start with your link wheel. Create a simple one first till it burst into a major complicated link wheel.

Just keep it open, don't interlink that properties that are backlinking to your site and you should be fine.

in regards to not interlinking from the 2nd tier sites...

i am thinking about purchasing 5 separate class c ip addresses and using each ip address to start its own link wheel. i am thinking about purchasing additional domain names for each ip address, and using these additional domain names to interlink between each other and eventually to link to the money site? does that still leave a "foot print"

Sure looks like one to me.
