.edu are good, but what about .ac.uk?

Any .edu's are very good backlinks, especially if they are from another country. It will of course generate traffic becuase they are high quality backlinks.

Ac.uk doesn't mean it isn't an edu site and with regards too google local search findings if you have a uk site and have therefore .ac.uk links to your site they will carry same weight as if you have .edu links, however, at end of day you need a mix between some foreign, some local and then from 0-9 PR nofollow and do-follow links to really accelerate your pagerankings

My limited testing on the subject would indicate that .ac.** links carry more weight than a regular link in a similar way to .edu links. It's almost impossible to quantify whether they are mathematically as powerful as .edu links, but they certainly appear to give a little boost. I expect that this is because not everyone can just sign up for a .ac.** domain - you have to be a valid government funded educational institute in most cases.

However they are more difficult to spam; most .edu are monstrous, sprawling sites that usually have a few insecure CMSs installed on them somewhere. ac.** domains tend to be smaller, eg just the splash and info pages for a particular school, so they tend to have less opportunities to drop links.

the next question we're all keen to hear the answer to, is this - were the links RELEVANT and thats why you may have had a better response from G, or were they simple profile links bearing no relevance to the subject of your website?

if the former, thats interesting to know though it doesnt prove anything, but if its the latter, its safe to assume that .ac.uk carries a ton of weight in G's eyes, regardless of the content relevancy to your backlink/website.

.ac worth is more than many other domains, but it's not equivalent to .edu domain. Both of domains have their own importance.

Well .edu and ac.uk usually have really nice neighborhood and nice high quality links. IMO that is what makes them higher quality.

Guys, these are just .edu links from the UK. Of course they count! Google doesn't read the URL and decides that anything that ends in .edu is awesome; it's just that .edu sites are generally authoritative and they pass trust. That is all.

Agreed on this one, I would take a ac.uk over a .edu any day
