GoDaddy will attempt to "fine" you $200 - or charge you $75 - for creating links on other people's websites...

It doesn't seem to matter who makes the report or what reason you give. If they get an abuse email about your domain, you are going down.

this is pretty worrying, and also hard to believe as surely you could just spam the URL microsoft or any body elses url and then godaddy would go to them (as long as the url was hosted by them)

Time to start moving my domains.

This very true...its happened to me. I'm loosing a domain because I refuse to give them money.. its pure extortion. They will find a way to state your violating there tos.

Well yes, but I think they are a smart about who they send these "fine" letters to.

You sign your life away in their Terms of Service.

If you are a relatively small site, trying to make a buck, and they catch you "spamming" your links (which isn't even legally "spamming", but whatever...) - then they will hit you with a massive fine FOR THAT DOMAIN ONLY.

That is the part to remember here. If you do get a letter, don't freak out too hard. They are not going after every domain you own, only the "infringing" one(s).

LOL NoDaddy! Just came across this site ;)

They're just like the damned police state we live in. Most everybody does something that is considered illegal. So they state can simply demand fines (money) whenever they feel like doing so.

An oldie but a goodie! I have no idea how they have not had their domain revoked. Or been sued for that matter!? But kudos to them!

I wish i wouldn't have read this, this stuff almost always seems to happen to me shortly after reading about it.

Lol I hear you Dumper. Don't be too alarmed though. They have been doing this for years. That, and you can easily move your domain names to namecheap for about the same price in under 24 hours start to finish. Just be sure to follow a recently updated "how to" guide on moving away from GoDaddy.

Those bastards always change their ways/make it more difficult to transfer a domain name away. All the while sending you a million emails along the lines of "SORRY?! WHY ARE YOU LEAVING?!? PLEAAAAAAAAASE DO NOT LEAVE!!"

That is the best part about leaving them :P

If you read TOC of Gaydaddy.

"You do not own domain technically". its Gaydaddy who is owner of your domain.

Exactly...

Which I think is abhorrent and should be illegal at least in North America.

Or what can't ICANN revoke GoDaddy's status as a registrar?

I mean really... who the hell deems GoDaddy the police of the internet?

Posting a link on anothers website is not illegal. They should not be able to condemn you for doing so.

I only use them for their backorder service I wish I could find another provider for that.

ive bought over 15 domains with godaddy. never gave me any problems except once they tried to give me a courtesy call WHILE i was in class lol. maybe its time to switch.. whats a good domain registrar?

What a bunch of suckers!

I have plenty of domains with Godaddy. Do you guys think I should transfer them to Namecheap? Or some other registar?

I've got about 60 domains with GD but do not use them for anything other than registrar services. Just convenience, but I do hate all the upsells every time I renew a domain or reg a new one. Maybe I should move them all to Namecheap, I have a handfull there too.

I don't mind their upsell strategy, but after reading thins about fine because of spam complaints on domains they host, I'm seriously considering moving to namecheap. The problem is, I don't know if it's possible to just transfer domains (without prolonging registration) for free.

OK, so I went to namecheap chat support any asked them. They don't do transfers without extending domains, so you'd have to pay for each of your domains. However they don't fine users for spam complaints like Godaddy does.

I have all my sites on Hostgator, very pleased with them.
