I think it might be a controversy whether black hat equals to cheating.
in some sense, they are the same thing.
when you say searching for holes in computer programming, if someone knows it, they will make use of it. black hat seo is like making use of holes in search engine. cheating does the same thing, if there is no holes, people would not have the chance to make use of it.

black hat is all about being clever while maintaining one's integrity

i'd say blackhat is not cheating, but exploiting. when you find a loophole, you exploit and profit from it.

Lets just take gmail for example. although gmail has introduced sms verification, still people know the loophole and are profiting from it.

Re: black hat equals to cheating or not?

Simple:
black hat not equal to cheating

BH business works almost same as any brick & mortar business... If all the great businesses, corporates, and others do not cheat (one way or other), then BH business also does not cheat. Different plane of principles and strategies, take it or leave it, IMO. :)

I don't think cheating is the right word. It's deception without a doubt. Most of the time it's done at the expense of others.

There are ups and downs of using BlackHat and it is not always better to use those methods.

Anyway I wouldn't say it is cheating. It is like Haridada said 'exploiting'.

Most of the time it's done at the expense of others.

Like AdWords vouchers & Facebook coupons, where nobody give's a f* about when it is done, right? ;) [*Hint = Doing it Myself]

Nevertheless, when it's at the expense of others, like scamming people who are in need of money, it's not the BlackHat we are talking about here at BHW. That is fraud.

Some may think marketing CB products is bad, too. But hey, it's not my fault that there are that naive people. This comes in the category of being "dumb"

I mean like polluting peoples forums with xrumer shit or flooding their WP comments or filling web2.0 sites with trash. I mean I started as a mass mailer so I don't care, but this stuff does really bug people like crazy. There's no point in acting like the vast majority of BH isn't somewhat immoral.

That kind of depends on what you mean by cheating.

Blackhat is about figuring out ways to game the system. It's about figuring ways to get around the various rules that companies and websites put in place to make it more difficult for marketing. Blackhat marketing involves ignoring or even breaking the rules that are inconvenient. So in the sense of breaking the rules to get ahead, you could say that blackhat is cheating. At least it's cheating against the system.

If you mean cheating in the sense of cheating someone out of their money, then that's a different thing. Blackhat isn't about fraud, it's not about scamming people, nd it's not about breaking the law. If you're running blackhat methods that cross over into illegal activities and stealing peoples money then your no longer running a blackhat operation, you've become a scammer and a crook. So in that sense of cheating, blackhat is not the same as cheating.

Most blackhatter don't have any tolerance for scams or scammers.

Black hat is not cheating it's a technique called "deception"
I agree with dannyhw.
So better use White Hat than this. :)

if cheating simply means not playing by the rules,
then blackhat is absolutely cheating ;)

imo people trying to push their own moral agendas onto others is much worse than any of the black hat stuff we do online.

you really have to question where these rules come from in the first place.
in the case of black hat seo, google makes the rules for how they rank their search results.

those that play by google's rules are white hats.
those that don't are black hats.

now if you were to say in this case that the black hats are "immoral" simply for breaking google's rules,
then that would mean you're allowing google to decide your morals for you.

essentially google becomes your God.
if you do what google wants you to do, you're a good person, and if you don't, then you're a bad person.

is this starting to sound fucked up yet? ;)

It's chetaing, no doubt!

Search engines wants good content in their results, black hatteres don't provide then, othey only know some rules to force his sites go up.

It's not ilegal, ind I don't know if it's inmoral, but is a cheat, and if they caught you doing, you will be penalized, no doubt.

But, cheat is so times soooo fun!!!!:p

Black hat is a way of creating your own set of rules. A bhatter does not follow rules set by other people. We observe, examine, keep what we like just because we like it. it is an "option" for us. We may follow or we may come up with alternatives to get what we want. We may show it like we are following all the terms but the reality is mostly something different. It's an art of deception, just like an illusionist. In the end, people get what they want to see, we get what we want to accomplish.

Non bhatters, obey and follow the rules, policies etc. That's the difference. We have an option to choose. We have freedom, flexibility. But that stays within legal boundries. We don't do fraud.

Pecunia non olet ("money does not smell") is a Latin saying. If they take money for our shit, we make money out of peoples stupidity and necessity. And other stuff also :)

Black Hat = Creative & Dynamic thinking. Not cheating.

Black Hat also = Out of the box thinking.

A small example is If you are a service provider in fiverr and you want your gig to become featured, you dont cheat. You use blackhat techniques to get your gig featured.
