Which page on my site should I be pointing to?

I am starting my backlink campaign for my site and was wondering which page on my site my backlinks should point to?

Should they point to my index.html page or another page on my site?

Or does it matter in terms of how google decides the overall PR for my site?

There are a variety of backlinking methods for what you want to do.
Point your keyword anchored links to the relevant page on your site.

If your main keyword is - dog collars - point the keyword anchor backlink to your home page.

If you have a page targeting - blue dog collars - point that keyword anchor backlink to that page.

This way you can get multiple pages for different keywords to rank in G.

As far as overall PR ranking, I don't know for certain how that is calculated. I can tell you that I have one PR 3 site that is over 60 pages and one PR 3 site that is 1 page - go figure?

You need a variety. Have 50k links to your homepage or whatever, then if you have 5 pages of sub keywords, acquire 20k links each. Wait a week or 2, see if any real jumps in rankings, if not, continue.

Just a word of advice that I have found out through trial and error and someone else here also said (can't remember where). I have had much more success when I have targeted only one keyword per url. Sure enough I would be ranking well for one kw, add some links to the same url with another kw, and I might go up a little for the second but I drop for the first. That dilutes your link juice imo. I think it's ok to have the same keyword pointing to different url's though IF that keyword is all in the title. I think of it as each page of my site being a microsite itself, and so far that strategy is paying off.

I generally have more backlinks to my inner pages and that linkjuice passes to the main page. It' s hard to give a definitive answer due to all the other factors involved but I've been doing that for a couple of years and have a lot of keyword phrases ranking on pg 1 of G with both the inner page and the main page for that particular keyword.

Having 20% of the urls on page 1 of google gets great results.
