Difficult to outrank Wikipedia page???

I have a site rankin 2nd/3rd for a keyword that receives 12k exact searches/month.

1st is wikipedia
2nd are youtube results
3rd is my page

ranking 3rd i receive 8k impressions in searches/month (according to webmaster tools) but only receive 200-300 clicks. Wikipedia is killing my traffic, how can I out rank this page?? Surely it cannot be impossible?

Make a youtube video based on your KW..and backlink it, social BM it, etc..

How many backlinks do you have to your articles compared with the Wikipedia article, maybe some more link building is needed also do you have any unique content on your niche that you can add to the Wikipedia article? So that you can edit the article and add your link to the page.

Even though Wikipedia links are no-folow dont you think that if the Wikipedia article you are competing with has a link to your article Google may give your article more authority.

Its the same for the Youtube page create a simple on topic video and with a link to your article.

I have 1400 (relevant) backlinks to the 3year old domain, the wikipedia page has 30 backlinks

any ideas? should i just run a batch of scrapebox blasts to the site?

I doubt that a scrapebox blast will help you much if you already have 1370 more links than the next page.

Should note that the backlinks come from a number of blogs (mixture of blogspot/wordpress and self hosted), and the link is sitewide eg upto 200 backlinks from a single domain

Try getting the wiki page deleted. If it's a fairly small keyword or a non notable person, put a criteria for speedy deletion, and then get another account to second it.

It should be gone within a couple of hours.

hey vitomelon, thats a great idea and could work on some of my other sites but the one in question is a sports related keyword and would be very difficult to have the wiki page removed

Yes it's possible with enough links, quality and quantity.
I beat the wikipage for my main keyword, the monthly exact searches is 12k as well.
My site is PR2 and 3+ years old (bought old domain)
I use various linkings from linkwheel, my own profile links scheme, article directories, blog posts, manual comments, and xrumer profiles.
Not all links point to my main site, some to the web 2.0, some to inner pages, articles, blog posts....
Currently I have around 1.5K links (LD) and 1.2K (LP), around 25% of them are sidewide.
In content contextual link is important.
I know some 'experts' say 'anchored link' is the most important thing, but anchored contextual link will give more power.
As well as giving more power to your direct links by giving them links.

You appear to be very new to SEO, you can't just start learning this week and expect to tackle Wikipedia by the end.

You really need to include important factors, is the keyword in title? desc? url? Check the meta tags (not sure how wikipedia does those, however).
Check the page PR is sometimes helpful and check the keyword density.

@Macdonjo3 my keyword is included in all: url,description,title and meta tags. All I have learned about SEO, I have implemented but for some reason I just cannot seem to outrank the wiki page. I am ahead of sites such as BBC, Guardian, Daily Mail, Telegraph, Goal, Sky Sports & Facebook (official page) in the rankings.

edit the wikipedia site and use it as a backlink. Don't make it spammy, just like a resource or something. Then continue backlinking on your site and you'll get over it.

@OP Keep building links everyday. Try adding 10k links and see what the result. Wikepedia has high pr you cannot simply outrank it with few backlinks.
