SEO myths and reality

Penalty is the wrong word to use, but some people will tell you that Google picks the "first" copy to display in the serps and some people will tell you they pick the "best".

My feeling is that it's the best one. It's impossible to tell which one was first anyway. The thing is most people just don't have the edge they need to be better than the original, so they put up a nasty spun version hoping G won't have to pick one.

Personally, I'll take a heavily optimized massive scraper blog that looks nice and functions nice any day.

The only thing I will say about this is I have a site with nothing, but horribly spun junk ranking #1 for a keyword with 113,000,000 results. the site has been up for a little over 1 year. I did nothing special as far as link building goes. Just the standard stuff everyone here does.

isn't it funny how the more horrid your content the more adsense clicks you get? I really wish quality had better results because I would love to show my friends and family what I am doing without the associated embarrassment.

Actually it would be quite funny if we threw up millions of useless junk sites, because that way nobody at google could check them all so you could make some decent money from them lmao.

Oh I've had millions and millions of pages of total rubbish deindexed on the same day. Actually it was pretty impressive on their part!

I can imagine that if they where doorway pages etc Danny but individual websites, would be impossible for them, now i know this is a virtually impossible task but imagine if everybody just done one each a week it would be feasable to start proving that google talks bull.

Well you could always spend a little time building a really high quality site geared toward providing good content to your visitors. Promote it however much you want but don't waste a lot more time on it after just making a nice site you could be proud to show your friends and family.

Then when someone asks what you do, you first show them the really impressive quality site. Then if they ask how you make money with it, you can show them the money making site, and explain that sites like that one are where the money actually is.

That way you don't need to be embarrassed at all because you're also showing that you make really good sites as well, they just aren't where the money's at.

You might even get lucky and the good looking site might start growing traffic on its own. :smokin:

Yes made some different comments dropped in a link and anchor to my site and blasted away, as of today still on page 1 but dropped a place.
Doesn't that then sorta invalidate the intent of your test? Couldn't your initial success be due to the direct comment spamming and have nothing to do with your dup articles?

Well he has to do something to promote the site. I think the point is that the efforts weren't penalized because of duplicate content.

He made a site, blasted away and the site hit the first page. The fact that he just used a hell of a lot of scraped content didn't make it any harder to rank.

Ah, I guess I misunderstood what xgenseo does and how he used it. SO he used the copied articles on his site and used xgenseo and scrape box to promote.

Sorry no you should just scrape the articles from anywhere using Xgenseo and then just drop your links into the text, do not use content from your site, but you can scrape articles and put them on your site , but use other articles to promote.

I just added that point because dannyhw mentioned it and it pertains to the discussion.

The reality of scraping is that most duplicate content doesn't fall into the category of copyright infringement. When dealing with copyrights, most of the time reusing scraped content falls within the realm of fair use. Even if fair use doesn't apply, most of the time no one will ever file a complaint.

In any case it isn't a duplicate content penalty. The info you provided in this thread is a pretty useful step by step method.

edit-
and yeah.... the way your using the scraped content insulates you even from a copyright infringement penalty. Even if one of the articles did contain copyrighted content, (and someone filed a complaint to google), all that would happen is that one page would get removed from the serp. Since it isn't a page on your site all that would mean is you lost that single backlink. All the rest of the articles you scraped and reposted will still be out there working for you.

If you use a copyrighted article from e zi ne for example - the author bitches about you then what? The links, links back to your site and they can get you that way. What do you think?

Well that's why you sometimes need to make a judgment call. Like I said that would be a copyright issue not a duplicate content penalty.

If that were to happen then yeah you'd lose those links. If it were a major problem then yeah they could possibly track you down by the links to your site, but except in rare cases that isn't very likely. In reality it's relatively rare to get copyright complaints from the kind of content you're scraping. If you keep citations in place even more rare. DMCA complaints are mostly going to come from the big boys, major publishers, major magazine and news agencies, and of course the biggest of them all the music and movie industries. If you leave citations in place the big guys usually accept it as fair use and consider it just a little more advertizing back to them as well. The mpaa and riaa are of course a different matter, but they're mostly after the guys copying movies and songs which is a lot different than scraping articles, they usually won't care if your scraping reviews and things like that.

The vast majority of what gets scraped doesn't create any copyright problems. If you do end up with a complaint it's most likely going to be a minor problem where you just lose out on that article. Remember you're not actually publishing that content on your own site, just using it for article marketing. It's unlikely they'll pursue it past that article site.

If you have plenty more then it should have little overall effect on your project. Most of the time it's a pretty safe gamble that there won't be any complaints at all though.

One of the most informative posts here, always a good sign to see GreyWolf in the thread...:) I bet somebody already wrote a guide and is selling it on DP and WF LMAO
Anyway I had this dilemma for many weeks about the duplicate content, PLR articles to be exact. I am very glad to know it is OK and not a big deal to post them. I dont do the duplicate content within my websites whatsoever.
btw. I usually change words and even sometimes rewrite them, not too much though.
Again, Thanks a lot

LOL. Well thanks, but I think it's actually even a better sign to see antx16 making a thread. I'm just good at explaining things, antx16 actually comes up with new methods and ideas you can use.

Follow his suggestions and you might just find yourself getting some traffic and making some money. :cool2:

This.

Hi there.
A very interesting discussion.
I might second the fact that dupe content is a myth. I have an autoblog with pr3 that's nothing but duplicate content, however it's on the old domain. So I wanted to ask Antx16 ,did you have any content on the site that you were blasting? I mean did you post the scraped articles straight to the website?
Thats a very important part that I haven't seen (or missed) in your post. What is the content ? Because I don't believe one can get to #1 for a normal keyword without having a content and bunch of it

Hey There - It would be great if you could let me know where to buy old used domains from? what would be your source?

Thanks for your help
