SEO myths and reality

How do you ping your sites? DO you use any sweet software or manually?

Just used Scrapebox for the blogengine blogs, and let Xgenseo do its own stuff

Penalty is the wrong word to use, but some people will tell you that Google picks the "first" copy to display in the serps and some people will tell you they pick the "best".

My feeling is that it's the best one. It's impossible to tell which one was first anyway. The thing is most people just don't have the edge they need to be better than the original, so they put up a nasty spun version hoping G won't have to pick one.

Personally, I'll take a heavily optimized massive scraper blog that looks nice and functions nice any day.

Well actually site was not even indexed but after running Xgenseo it was indexed about 45 minutes later, i know Google dances sites all the time and i know about the honeymoon periods, what i am trying to get to is all the rubbish about unique articles is utter rubbish.

Yep.

The only real reason for spinning content is to get multiple rankings for one piece of content. Even that is not always true since Google does rank duplicate content all the time. With spinning, you just increase your chances of ranking more pages longer.

Spinning content that is solely meant for backlinking purposes only is a waste of time in my opinion.

On autoblogs (and maybe touching on GreyWolf's point as well)-
Let's say you scrape a post and Big G finds the original author after following your OBL, can it really penalize the original author for duplicate content (since it was found on your page first)?

The answer is, probably not. It would be highly exploitable with the right coding, and I'm surprised more people haven't publicized a way to do it so they can capitalize on the fear.
Read my above post again. The duplicate content penalty isn't for content on separate websites.

If you scrape a post and the SE finds your website and the original author's website then it will index both pages for the same keywords. The site that has better overall SEO will have their page ranking higher. The one that doesn't rank as well will be due to other factors, not because it's duplicate content. If you don't have unique content then you might be up against more competition for keywords in that content, but that isn't really a penalty.

If you have multiple pages on your own website that all use the same content, then as google crawls your site and finds multiple pages with duplicate content then it'll choose one page as the most relevant and ignore the others. Unless your using a canonical meta tag, google will make its own decision which is the best page. Whatever choice it makes will probably not have the effect your hoping for when you created the pages. Instead of having one page ranking well, you'll have multiple pages ranking poorly.

Even if other websites have the same content... even if their sites are already indexed for that content... that same content on one of your pages will still be unique when compared to the other pages on your website. For your own SEO efforts the keyword value of that content will apply to that single page of your site. How well you rank compared to other similar websites will depend on how much better your overall SEO and SEP is than theirs.

Greywolf's summary is spot on the big G only looks for duplicate content on your site, and even if the actual owner of the content complains you can just take it off and use something else.

Can't you get banned for auto blogs because in the adsense TOS it mentions having unique content?

GreyWolf, so you're saying that Google never actually avoids ranking duplicate content together, but the copies that don't rank well just wouldn't rank well anyway?

That goes against what everybody else says, but everybody else just repeats things they hear and this actually makes a lot more sense.

I get it, I was trying to reaffirm your post but it looks like I worded my post incorrectly. I may update it later to clarify my point.

Does it? As far as I know AdSense is ok with aggregators. They might not be ok with some other techniques that get used. Blatant copyright infringement is a different story I'm sure. But then who wants crappy free to syndicate articles as content?

Yes, it's in their TOS, but the reality is that a majority of Adsense sites are autoblogs. Same goes for a lot of other affiliate sites.

Whether you do it or not, is a personal choice you have to make, but it's a number's game with Adsense. The faster you can build an empire of these sites, the more money you will make. That's why autoblogs are so popular.

Penalty is the wrong word to use, but some people will tell you that Google picks the "first" copy to display in the serps and some people will tell you they pick the "best".

And some people feel it is the article that has the most backlinks to it will win in the SERPS. And that is what I believe to be true.

That is so true that is why i use Xgenseo just for the easy to use submission method, it also gets you some serious link juice because other sites scrape your stuff with your links in it.

It's certainly a factor. In most cases you're trying to beat out authority + internal links so you just have to have your authority and internal / external links be more powerful.

Does anybody else feel like this is the most informative thread that most people will probably ignore?

This is such a great point that so many fail to grasp. Posting content doesn't just mean you will get links from what you posted personally. The internet is huge, and there are a lot of sites - including big name company sites that most people wouldn't think of - that scrape content.

Whenever something you put out there gets picked up and posted elsewhere, that's even more links pointing back to you.

Are you in any way affiliated with Xgenseo?

I havent heard of the software, care to summarize what it does?

I think we are all getting the point now and thanks to the guys who are starting to understand what i am trying to explain, even though i am not the best at putting things in black and white.

This brings up an important point that I left out in my previous replies. There's a difference between duplicate content and copyright infringement. This might also explain how the idea of duplicate content penalty has expanded well beyond what it actually is.

Algorithms can't really distinguish between duplicate content and copyright infringement, so there's really no way for the crawlers to tell the difference. But if you're using copyrighted content and someone files a complaint to google then your pages can be removed from the results.

This isn't really a duplicate content penalty though. It's a copyright infringement penalty, and it will only happen if google is given notification by the copyright holder. The bulk of the content people talk about when discussing duplicate content does not fall into this category.

Nope buddy have nothing to do with the software, i am only using a trial version, and after that i will move onto something else, i am just sharing what i have done, and hope it helps you.

I absolutely agree with you Greywolf, but if you look at what i have done, I have no duplicate copyright content actually on my site, i have only submitted articles and post with links in it to my site, so there is no way google can catch up with all the different posts and articles.

I just added that point because dannyhw mentioned it and it pertains to the discussion.

The reality of scraping is that most duplicate content doesn't fall into the category of copyright infringement. When dealing with copyrights, most of the time reusing scraped content falls within the realm of fair use. Even if fair use doesn't apply, most of the time no one will ever file a complaint.

In any case it isn't a duplicate content penalty. The info you provided in this thread is a pretty useful step by step method.

edit-
and yeah.... the way your using the scraped content insulates you even from a copyright infringement penalty. Even if one of the articles did contain copyrighted content, (and someone filed a complaint to google), all that would happen is that one page would get removed from the serp. Since it isn't a page on your site all that would mean is you lost that single backlink. All the rest of the articles you scraped and reposted will still be out there working for you.
