You really have only had a negative impact on link-building to a new site? What types of links are you sending to it right away?
I have launched over 400 sites from very small info sites to 10K page e-commerce sites and I ALWAYS build links to them right away. It is pretty rare that I get a site sandboxed (what effects the sandbox has and if it really exists the way most people explain it is a whole other discussion).
What I do will depend on how competitive the niche is (obviously) but for the longer tail keyword, not obscure keywords, I expect to be in the top five results of Google within 2 - 10 weeks. There is no way I would wait six months to start building links. There is no reason. Competitive keywords can take 2 - 10 months of link-building so you may as well get started.
The entire process is way too long to put in this post as the mind map has over 100 branches, but here is a portion of what I do for medium to lower competition keywords (generally anywhere from 500 - 50,000 phrase match searches per month):
- of coarse onpage optimization of the money site is the first thing. Make sure all of this is taken care of before moving on.
- I set up three to four tiers
- Tier one: Feeder/pumper sites - I will almost always buy an aged domain for these. I have several HTML templates that we have built from sctatch (you can get these done on odesk for like $15, they are cheap). After picking one we edit it just a bit so it is not the same as any others we have put up and put 4-10 pages of unique content on it about the specific niche. I also put a WP blog on a subpage and continually add content to get more pages indexed while sending internal links with good anchor text to the main HTML pages of the site. Use one centralized back end to manage your WP content when you get to a point to where you have several of these, lots of options out there. This pumper can also be used to promote several other sites. That is the beauty of building out a network like this. Within random pages of the site link to your money site with good anchor text but also link to other authority sites within the same niche. Could be a wiki page, aboutus page, .edu page etc. Do not link to your money site on every page, we usually have less than 5% of the links on these sites going to any given url. Again, use this to promote other sites you own or have an interest in. I will do anywhere between 1 and 10 of these kinds of sites depending on need (check the backlink quality and quantity of your competition before beginning). There is a lot more in this step, but that gives you the general idea.
- Tier two: web 2.0 props - Squidoo, hubpages, multiply, ect... there are a ton of good ones. When creating a new account I will generally post for 4 - 5 days without having any links in the most important ones (hubpages and others). This usually gives me a higher authority score on the sites and gets me above the do follow hard deck quicker. I will sometimes send these links directly to my money site for some variety but most of the time they will go to the tier one pumpers. The number of these created will depend on the niche. Make sure and fill out all the info possible in the profile. There are a lot of cheap software packages to manage these sites from one back end.
- Tier three - articles, good forum profiles, guest blog posts and similar links- These are pretty self explanatory and very very easy links to get. Just make sure whatever software you are using that it will kick out a list of urls so you can index them. I will also randomly send about 10 - 20% of the links from this tier to the money site and tier ones for a natural looking footprint. Just make sure to never have links from the same profile or article going to your money site and other sites. Keep the money site links clean so they can't be tied to any of the other links in this tier. The rest of the 80 - 90% of the links in this tier go to your tier two sites. Lots more here also, but you get the idea.
- Tier Four - Indexers - there are several ways you can do this. Set up your own indexing clusters using back link energizer (I love this software when it is used correctly), use xrumer, scrapebox, rss aggregators and anything else you can think of to index your existing links. You should get to a point to where you can keep above 70% of your total links in Googles index. That is SEVERAL TIMES higher than what I used to get before setting up this network. Run all the urls that you have your links on through scrapebox to see which ones are already in the index. The ones that aren't, add them to the indexing cluster through BLE, blast comments to them via scrapebox and xrumer (although be careful about sending too many xrumer links to web 2.0 sites, I have had some banned) and compile an rss feed with something like RSS Bomber. Check the same links in scrapebox after this process and take out the ones that were indexed. Resubmit the ones that weren't. You will be continually adding new links to index, this will be a never ending process if you keep putting up more sites.
I know I left out a lot of info, but I hope you get the basic idea of some of the things I do.
This might seem like a lot of work, but after you have the system in place and the network set up, it really runs quite efficiently. You will have plenty of linking power and should be able to get your sites ranked very quickly.
