Links don't count for SERPs anymore.

Hey man, don't you know?

OP has been doing SEO since 1994 when "SEO" meant "I know a guy who owns a news website, I'll get him to link us!"

LOL

I think what he is saying is having a ton of links don't work any more.

Example my site I only have 600 links. and I am on the first page. Every other site that is on the first page for the same key term has over 2500 links.

My site pings out at 100% optimized where the other sites rank out between 50 and 60 %

So I would have to agree its not about the number of links but the combo of the right links and having your page set up right can work wonders.

Why is it that i cannot answer and only get a warning about posting links when i do not have any links in my post?

That's an automatic filter if I'm not mistaken. It will disappear once you have more than 15 posts.

Btw Reg, love how you're naming your pages - what is "article_info.php?articles_id=13" supposed to rank well for?

Oh, and your "Latest SEO Articles" section on your front page is all a bunch of 404's

I think what the OP is trying to say is that the sheer NUMBER of links does not have much weight with Google, however what does have weight is the RELEVANCY of the links pointing to the page.

Example:

A pizza recipe page with 10 links from pizza related sites would rank higher in Google for the keyword "pizza recipes" than would another pizza recipe page with 200,000 links from sites about computers, toothbrushes, cat chow, and other sites that have nothing to do with pizza recipes.

The name of the game is relevancy.

When Google brought in the Mayday update few commented on their statement that Mayday affected ranking and not crawling or indexing.

"Ranking" is PageRank, "Crawling" is when their spider visits your site, and "indexing" is SERPs.

:o Where do you have this from? Mayday affected ranking like SERPS not PR. PR isnt the point Google is after since ages. So I think you are confusing terms here...

Okay now i have site that has 200k backlinks, and i got #1 serps position with my primary keyword, now what? i think you wrong if you said that links (backlinks) are useless.. :)

First of all everyone stop saying that the OP isn't saying that links don't count, just that you need relevancy. I quote you this straight from the OP post:

If Google placed ANY weight on links this could not happen.

It's pretty clear he's saying links don't have ANY value.

Second links from sites without relevant content help to rank in SERPs, and you can rank by sheer volume of links from totally unrelevant sites alone, just ask any of the very successful link spammers on this very forum.

Third it may be true that Google places more weight on relevant links, but don't forget that Googlebot isn't human, and it's very difficult to teach a bot what's relevant and what's not: the only reliable way I can think of making this work is to add more weight to links coming from pages that have the link anchor text somewhere else on the page (or url or meta), even relying on synonyms would be very unreliable and difficult to program (because, again, it would be very difficult for a bot to determine if the page is really relevant or has these words on the page for totally unrelated reasons and meaning).

If links don't count, what happens when two or more sites are perfectly optimized for the same keyword?

wow .. so many idiots answering the op thread.
if you don't agree don't post crap, but post arguments on why he is wrong. otherwise you are counter productive and makes you more idiot than the op.

btw .. the op is right and if you can't read between the lines than you are the idiot

Its true, links really don't matter. My site has a total of two backlinks from dp, and i'm on page 97 for a really uncompetitive keyword. :D

I understand the filter but twice I have written replies, being careful to not breach the rules, no links etc and the post will not be accepted.

Most frustrating.

A keyword that shows 40,000,000 results that no one is trying to rank for will be MUCH easier to rank for than a keyword with 100,000 results that a score of websites are competing for.

You make my point for me.
On-page SEO is more important than links.

If you do an exact match for my search term you will find about 70 sites are actually competing.

I am saying that links do not noticeably affect SERPs.
The amount of links you build is not going to move your search results up even one slot.
If they did the site with 277,000 links should have been in #1, regardless of content.

Links only count for PageRank now. Page rank does not affect SERPs.
Page rank is the metric Google uses to determine the frequency of it's visits to your website.
The more often it visits, the fresher your indexed content.

Guess what? Adwords keyword tool shows that the keyword in your example has no searches per month, hence no one is trying to rank for it. It doesn't matter that the #2 site has 277,000 links, because it couldn't care less about that keyword. It ranks because one or two of its links use it as an anchor text by pure coincidence.
DUDE!!! you call yourself a SEO and you use Google's keywords as a tool? It is so deeply flawed as to be totally unreliable for organic results.
If I check "seo information" in the adwords tool it shows me 2400 local when signed out and 4400 when signed in.
OTOH "keyword discovery" shows 2 (TWO) monthly searches.

Out of 124 keyword phrases used to find my site, the phrase you quote was used 27.1 % This equals about 25 searches a month.

I' ve beaten pages with 30.000 links with sites of 200 links, that's means that links doesn't count? NO!
That measn that those 30.000 links come from a very low numbre of domains name and probably bad anchor names.
I'm ranking high some sites using diferent IP sites and good anchor. I have sites in first position where I never ioptimized the site for this word and without uses this word on the entire page...only backlinks and more backlinks

Aldragon, what are you saying?
About increasing backlinks with an intention to increase the value of the site

While most of the links to your site will be gained gradually, as people discover your content through search or other ways and link to it, Google understands that you'd like to let others know about the hard work you've put into your content. Effectively promoting your new content will lead to faster discovery by those who are interested in the same subject (1). As with most points covered in this document, taking these recommendations to an extreme could actually harm the reputation of your site.

I have never said that links do not increase the value of a site.
Nor have I said that links are useless in promoting a site, just the opposite.
Links are for bringing traffic and advertising your presence.
If you are doing a link-building plan, focus on bringing traffic a forget all about SERPS.
If a paid link or a nofollow will bring you traffic, then use it.
I put my clients on paid links all the time to great advantage.

The more links you have to your site the more traffic you will bring, if you link properly.
(With Relevance). I have a vacation cottage rental business and I pay for links on petfriendly Canada to great advantage. About 30% of my bookings for a hundred dollar link.

Links are great for traffic, for promotion and marketing, and for PageRank.
They just do not do anything for SERPs.

You are out of your mind. I seriously hope the newbies understand just how off the wall you are. By your reasoning the site with the most links would rank for all keywords and of course that is not true. Have you heard of this little concept called Anchor Text? It is really a very cool thing, it tells Google why that link is important and why the website is linking to yours.

All links count towards PR but only links with the proper anchor text will help you in the SERPs

It is not the number of links you have that affects your rankings or your keyword it is the number of targeted links you have.

If I have 250k links to my site with no anchor text I am not going to rank well for my keywords. If I have 250k links to my site using the my keywords as anchor text for all those links then I will rank well.

Lets use a well know example.

Adobe is a well know company with lots of products and their website is optimized for those products. For some reason they Rank #1 for the term click here. Now why would that be? Could it be all those millions of links with click here in the anchor text? Of course it is. They sure have not optimized the Adobe site for the term click here.

Page Rank is a measure of the strength of your incoming links as Google seems them. Not a measure of visits by the Google bots. Do you dream this stuff up when you are sleeping? You have cause and effect confused. The bots come more often to high PR pages as a general rule (but not always) because they are higher PR sites not the other way around. I have low PR sites that are updated continuously that the bots come to a lot. I also have a higher PR site that I never update that the bots do not visit nearly as often. Bot visits do not cause increases in PR.
