Here's what I do to avoid cold calling and the inevitable rejection scenarios :

Only target businesses already using Adwords
  1. Email them - "Are You Spending Too Much On Google Adwords?"
  2. To replies - Arrange a suitable time to speak on phone/meet
  3. Meet/speak on phone and gather info
The email gets a 16% response rate.

Of course during the meeting you ask ask ask and listen listen listen BEFORE making suggestions.

Then tell them that you think that you can help and based on what they've said you'll come up with a very profitable strategy.

DO NOT TRY AND CLOSE THE DEAL THERE
(unless they're gagging for it already)

Go home and devise a plan. Maybe they revealed to you how much they're spending on Adwords - so you know roughly what their 'no-brainer' limit is.

They're already spending that cash - it's now just a matter of them giving it to you instead

Email them with your plan - include payment options (let them have choices) for Bronze, Silver, Gold etc.

Make sure the 'Bronze' is (just) within the no-brainer limit - this maximizes the chance of some kind of sale.

Your Silver and Gold will be proportionately more - you can always upgrade them to these after they see good results with 'Bronze'

The Silver and Gold options can include things like AR install and setup, more keywords ranking, website design overhaul, new websites (for different sub-niches eg plumbers - heating, boilers, landlord certification etc) etc etc

Good luck!

Good method, I do something similar, but my response rate is higher because my email is targeting the decision maker.

Share with the group your method, I'm sure we will find value in it...

You only get rejected if your opening statement isn't powerful enough.
Cold calling black ops training 101!
Day ;1,
When in an elevator stand at the doors facing everyone else facing you
Day ;2,
Pitch them!
Day ;3
Get on the bus or train, stand at the front face the passengers and pitch them!
Day ;4
Pick up phone and call CEO's of every major multinational company you can think of and
pitch them.
Day ;5
Realise you are only dealing with people the same as you who put on their socks
one at a time and there is nothing to be scared of but success itself.

Cool list. I do cold calling myself, and don't understand why so many people are afraid of it. If you learn that "rejection" actually helps you find your clients faster, you will never have a problem picking up the phone again.

@gonzo: email subject should have the decision maker's name.

what are some ways to get the response rates higher for email?

Don't sweat it bro - just send more emails. How many clients can you handle at once anyway? :p

OK - to answer your question here's one way - include a screen capture of their Adwords ad with a big red circle (well oval actually) right round it - with an arrow pointing to the free listings saying:

'Your competitors over here pay nothing!'
(or somesuch)

I use Snagit for this.

You get a bump in response, but it can be a pain to make.

Personally, I just send another 5 emails in the time it takes to fiddle about with the screen capture...
