...1 and 1 and namecheap gives up for free...i personally have started sending all my domains over to 1 and1...its cheaper than namecheap and whoever else (without the need for a discount)

It's difficult to hate a company as much as GoDaddy, but 1and1 are up there. Certainly for hosting. I finally finished moving the remainder of my domains away from them 6 months ago, then about a 2 months ago I get an emailed invoice for domains not even with them.

I phone them (which takes forever, although not as long as their email support of course) and explain the domains in question were transferred in Oct '08 and I won't be paying.

They explained that they will still charge me as I have to also remove them from my contract. I asked what contract? You don't own the domains or have any control or registration rights at all.

They said it's not their responsibility and I'm liable and hung up when I swore loudly! (For the record there's nothing, NOTHING, in the account or in their backward and very awkward "contracts" system.) They did sort it out in the end, but it took weeks and weeks.

They are getting out of the business because of custom TLDs. It will ruin the domain economy- no one will be registering domains - just custom TLDs.

I stopped using GoDaddy and moved my domain purchases to Namecheap which is nothing more than a large reseller for Enom. If you have the cash (and the traffic), you can start your own Namecheap though Enom. One thing is for certain, Namecheap hosting is absolutely terrible. I was with them for over 7 years when I finally had to move everything to Hostgator. They would go down for maintenance without any emails or warning, their customer service and support is chat or email only and comes from somewhere in eastern Europe. By far, their hosting has the most outages and downtime I have ever encountered. They are good for domain registrations and Whois protection but stay away from their hosting!

You also notice how bad their website is designed and coded. It's all coded in tables and looks like they outsourced to a indian on $2 an hour.

Its not indians who offers services at cheap rates (So said $2 or so), Its the buyers who begs whole day to do it for Low Rates.

i admit i did have some problems with them one time and the shit was a headache to get resolved...but i was not talking about hosting...just registering domains and privacy...compare them to namecheap and u will see they are cheaper...as far as hosting...i use liquidweb (shit is expensive but i never have problems with anything!)

I originally saw this years ago on nodaddy dot com and it made me laugh. My guess is that whoever buys GoDaddy will ruin it further, but other than the Superbowl ads I am not a fan and I don't use it. They are not the best for the type of thing we do here, and there are hundreds of posts as to why.

There are a lot of reasons GD is going on the block. Custom TLD's are not among the reasons.

TBH this is a bolder statement than the other guy made with no real facts to back it up. GoDaddy arent about to admit this as a reason are they, otherwise it affects the bid amounts for the company, which defeats the whole point of jumping ship this early on.
Im not saying this is the reason for the sell off, but I bet my left testicle its part of it.
This is not to say they know for a fact that they are going to sink when it happens, just that they really cant determined with any kind of certainty what is going to happen and when considering all the other factors in their decision, its not worth trying to hold on.

True, while custom TLDs will not wipe out domain registration all-together - it certainly will impact it. Thus. the best time to get out of a company (or sell) is when you're on top (GoDaddy).
