UK Government clarifies adults will still be able to use social media by verifying their identities with digital IDs, facial recognition, passports and credit cards.

It might soon spread like plague - threatening anonymity on social media. What do you think?

I think it's a horrible idea. There's no significant benefit to this in my opinion. Every problem they claimed this would solve can be solved using alternative means. But as we know, people in power always want more power and control.

This will equally affect IM and SM much more than people realize.

why would you want people providing their real info just to use the internet, identity theft is already a big enough issue, now scammers will immediately know they can access all your details in a single node

I wouldn't be surprised if a hacker steals the entire database and sells it on darkweb. Even that's not a problem. I frequently find people arguing & fighting with each other on platforms like X. Things might get personal if the anonymity no longer exists and people find a way to locate you. The websites will also find it easy to track your activity regardless of all the precautions.

It will be interesting to see how this develops. Identity verification may reduce fake accounts but it also raises valid concerns about privacy and anonymous participation online.
If more countries adopt similar rules then platforms will have to find a balance between user safety and protecting personal privacy.
