congratz for the victory @Melissam

u started already. lol

DAY 1 ROUND-UP

So we're up and running - and it's a comfortable start for @Walterlo (Mexico), with a more dramatic but winning start for @Sarabia (South Korea).
If you didn't see the Mexico vs. South Africa match then you might think it was full of action and drama with the three red cards. It was not. It was just a referee trying to make it all about him. This will be of no comfort to @Whitcoke (South Africa) but hey - at least they have a good cricket team?

----------
The Czechia (@Azaan) vs. South Korea game featured two contrasting styles - the Koreans playing some intricate possession football, and the Czechs chucking the ball into the box and throwing massive guys at it. And it worked for their goal too - and they nearly repeated the trick late on but an equaliser was beyond them.
----------
Today, it's @Inesh (Canada) vs. @SmTasker (Bosnia and Herzegovina) followed by @prey24 (USA) vs. @Salvad (Paraguay). I'm expecting two close matches with these - which of course means they'll both end up 6-0 to someone.
----------
And I have to include this video of Nigerian fans who hate South Africa so much that they travelled to Mexico just to hate watch them. A commitment to sporting rivalry I can only admire.

Truely a magnificent moment. Brings tears to my eyes. Such commitment. Beautiful

DAY 2 ROUND-UP

Remember when I said yesterday that I expected both games to be really close?

iu

@prey24 saw the USA get off to a remarkable start as they pummelled Paraguay (@Salvad) 4-1 in a superb attacking performance. This USA team is being talked about in some quarters as the best American team of all-time. Maybe there's something in it?

---------------------------
Meanwhile Canada (@Inesh) will be disappointed not to have also started with a victory after dominating Bosnia and Herzegovina (@SmTasker) in a 1-1 draw. The Canadians are highly regarded too but they should have won this eh?

Here's Austin Powers himself, Mike Myers, clearly having a wonderful time at yesterday's match:-

He looks like me watching Liverpool last season.

---------------------------
Four games today! 2022 hosts Qatar (@p3n7357) will be hoping to be nowhere near as absolutely awful as they were four years ago when they face a talented Switzerland (@Angelina.sk) side. I predict a 3-1 Swiss victory.

Brazil (@Fresh Money) vs. Morocco (@Venusaur) could be a cracker, especially if the latter lives up to their semi-final run of 2022. No Neymar for Brazil though, so someone else will have to do the diving. I'm going with a 1-1 draw.

Scotland (@Famia) finally made it back to the World Cup! And then they stuck them on at 2am Scotland time! Haiti (@Carlit) are rank outsiders but could cause the porridge botherers some issues. Still, I'm going 2-0 to Scotland.

And then Netherlands (@Stavro) are up next as they face Japan (@ShikharG). Both sides have good attacking talent but the latter will miss Kaoru Mitoma badly. I expect this to be close but with a few goals - I'll go 3-2 to the Dutch.

argentina is my favorite team so am hoping they can go all the way this year. looking forward to an exciting World cup and good luck to everyone in the lucky dip.

DAY 3 ROUND-UP

Remember when I said Morocco (@Venusaur) vs. Brazil (@Fresh Money) would be a 1-1 draw?

A superb game which Morocco dominated until Vini Jr. decided to wake up and almost break the back of the net. Both members should be happy with this result.

-------------------
Less happy will be @FannyG, as a talented Turkiye side were out-muscled by an impressive Australia side (@Guty) in a 2-0 defeat. Australia always qualify for the World Cup, never make much of an impression - but I can see them going further than usual here.

-------------------
Scotland (@Famia) squeezed past Haiti (@Carlit) in probably the worst game of the tournament so far. Not worth staying up to nearly 4am for and I would have closed my curtains if that game was playing in my back garden. I don't have a back garden but you get my point.

-------------------
A few days ago, Charles Barkley was quoted as saying the San Antonio Spurs were the dumbest team in the history of civilisation. So what does that make Switzerland (@Angelina.sk) after they conceded a late equaliser to somehow draw with a dreadful Qatar (@p3n7357) side? By my count they had 895 shots in the game and still couldn't get the job done. Qatar get their first World Cup point though - and probably their last.

-------------------
Today, Germany (@Kentoa) start their campaign against a debuting Curaçao (@Melissam). Some bookies are giving Curaçao a 33-1 chance of winning this game. I'm predicting 5-0 to Germany. Sorry to the many Curaçao born forum members.

I erroneously suggested yesterday that Netherlands (@Stavro) were playing Japan (@ShikharG). They were not. They are today though. I stand by my 3-2 to the Dutch prediction.

Côte d'Ivoire (@Claudis) will face Ecuador (@soyelco) in one that's too close to call. I suspect this will be a very bad game and I'm going for a 0-0 prediction. Will this stop me from staying up until nearly 2am watching it? Of course not.

And Sweden (@Kiemash) will be looking to shake off a terrible qualifying campaign against a pretty strong Tunisia (@Inem2) side. As a Liverpool fan, I just want to say that if Alexander Isak gets through this tournament without injury I will both be livid and relieved. Going 1-0 to Sweden here.

-------------------
Meanwhile, a couple of Scotland fans somehow managed to invade the Telemundo booth....

DAY 4 ROUND-UP

And Sweden (@Kiemash) will be looking to shake off a terrible qualifying campaign against a pretty strong Tunisia (@Inem2) side. Going 1-0 to Sweden here.

And this is why I closed my bet365 account.

Sorry, @Inem2, your guys took a hell of a beating. Sweden (@Kiemash) handed out a 5-1 thrashing with a great attacking display. Congratulations to Alexander Isak on making it through the game without an injury, too. Not that I'm bitter or anything.

---------------------------
Curacao's (@Melissam) World Cup debut briefly provided a moment of wholesome beauty when they dragged their game against Germany (@Kentoa) back to 1-1 - but it might be best not to talk about the rest of the game. 7-1 - but it could easily have been more.

---------------------------
Netherlands (@Stavro) vs. Japan (@ShikharG) struggled to live up to its billing in a poor first half but a thrilling second half made it worth persevering with. A 2-2 draw was a fair result but neither side convinced that they could go really deep into the competition.

---------------------------
Côte d'Ivoire (@Claudis) struck late through a superb Amad Diallo goal to beat an unlucky Ecuador (@soyelco) side 1-0. Ecuador hit the bar three times in a game that was far better than I expected. On a personal note I demand that Liverpool bid for Yan Diomande immediately. What are you waiting for?

---------------------------
Today, my personal pick Spain (@Fransh) take on debutants Cabo Verde. I fear this one could go the way of the Germany vs. Curacao game. I'm going 6-0 to Spain. Sorry, @mnunes532!

The game of the day sees perennial dark horse Belgium (@Steptoe) take on an experienced Egypt (@onebink). A close one to call, I'm just going with Belgium though - maybe 2-1.

Saudi Arabia's (@TheMarquis) World Cup record is appalling - and as they start against a strong Uruguay (@kaliof) side, I'm not expecting that to change. 2-0 to Uruguay, and Luis Suarez to bite the referee.

Iran (@Naits) face New Zealand (@chinin) in a match that even I'm not staying up to watch. Iran should win, maybe 2-0, but I predict this game will be one that everyone would be glad to sleep through.

---------------------------
Meanwhile, in Mexico....

And here's some Japanese fans paying tribute to their country's greatest export(s).

Hope everyone's had a gorgeous weekend.

If y'all need me, I'll be here still drinking the hatorade.
