What's a popular book that everyone seems to love, but you just couldn't get into?

Don't judge—everyone has a book he or she has tried numerous times without success.

I wonder what other books you've failed to connect with and why.

Here's my entry:

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho was a book that didn't really click with me.

Sure, it's a wonderful book, but I simply could not understand what all the fuss was about. It was too straightforward for me and I was waiting for something to happen, something that would allow me to relate to it.

Mine would probably be Rich Dad Poor Dad. I know it's recommended everywhere and a lot of people credit it with changing how they think about money, but I never really connected with it. I understood the message, but after finishing it I felt like I had gained more motivation than practical advice.

That doesn't make it a bad book at all. It just didn't live up to the hype for me. Funny how the same book can completely change one persons life and leave another person wondering what they missed.

Wasn't Robert Kiyosaki a fraud, hmmm? I also heard quite alot about him but it wasn't always in good light. I have his book and it has very surface level information. In my opinion.

Rich Dad Poor Dad for me as well. Also "The Secret" which was just a bunch of new age bs that both blamed the reader for not wanting something enough and also told the reader that their problems could be solved with "manifesting" instead of hard work. Man that book pissed me off so much.

i watched the movie, it was ok at best imo and I read the book online (a lil bit), it was truly bad

Not so much a popular book, more like some well known ones. I've tried getting into Lovecraft's books a few times since I do adore the concept of existential threats that are beyond understanding or let alone fighting. However, it's difficult to take some of the other works seriously when you realise the inspiration often stemmed from personal fears of which the guy had an abundance, mostly with things he didn't quite grasp the concept of. At some point the cosmic horror starts competing with the knowledge that the man was genuinely unsettled by things like mathematics, geometry... air conditioning. Takes a bit of the charm away.
