Hey everyone,

I have noticed Instagram pushing reels heavily, but I still see some accounts growing through regular posts and carousels.

What is working best right now for growth? Should we focus only on reels or maintain a mix of content types?

Also, how important is posting consistency compared to content quality in today’s Instagram algorithm?

Been seeing a lot of people praising trial reels. Not sure how universal they work

On Instagram, Reels drive more growth right now due to higher reach, algorithm push, and discovery beyond followers.

Reels are still pretty much the main driver for reach right now. Posts are good for people who already follow you but Reels get broadcast far. It's where the actual reach happens, I'd say.
That said though, posts and carousels are better for converting and retention for existing follows. A lot of accs grow by one then leverage the follows using the other.

As for consistency vs quality, quality matters more now, I'd say. Posting a lot of low-effort content doesn’t really get pushed like it used to. Don't slack though, but yeah. Quality is key there.

Reels are still the best for reach and getting in front of new people, but they’re not enough on their own anymore. Carousels and posts usually get better engagement (saves, shares) and help turn views into followers.

Best approach now is a mix: Reels for discovery, carousels/posts for retention.
And between consistency vs quality - quality wins. Posting often helps, but only if the content actually performs.

So the current winning strategy is a mix:
  • Reels = reach and discovery
  • Carousels/posts = engagement and retention

My experience shows that Reels is still the fastest-growing channel. You shouldn't focus solely on Reels, combine Reels to increase reach, carousels to provide deeper value and stories to maintain daily engagement. Consistent posting is important, but quality is still more important than quantity. Instagram recommends consistent and engaging content, regularity helps maintain engagement, while high-quality content sustains growth.

I think reels help with account growth; I've noticed that people are increasingly drawn to short reels with a storyline.

In my opinion, a mix of content types works best right now instead of relying only on reels.
But still reels usually get more reach, so they should be a main focus.

Regular posts and carousels help with engagement and building a loyal audience.
Consistency matters, but content quality is what really drives growth in the long run.

From what I’ve tested recently, Instagram is still very much Reels-first, but going 100% Reels isn’t the best approach anymore.

Here’s what I’m seeing:

Reels = reach
They’re still the main driver for discovery, especially for smaller accounts. Most of the growth (in my case) comes from Reels.

Carousels = engagement & conversions
Carousels are actually performing really well right now. They tend to get more saves and shares, which helps push them further. I’ve seen better follower conversion from carousels compared to Reels in some niches.

Single image posts
These are the weakest at the moment unless you already have a strong brand or aesthetic page.

Reels are currently driving more growth on Instagram thanks to their wider reach and stronger push from the algorithm. They also help you reach new audiences beyond your existing followers.

A good mix works better. Reels help with discovery, carousels are good for saves and deeper engagement, and regular posts/stories help keep your existing audience warm. If you only post Reels, you might get reach, but not always loyal followers.
For growth, the hook and retention on Reels matter a lot. For carousels, the first slide has to be strong enough to make people swipe. Random posting doesn’t really work anymore.
