Are automated backlinks still useful or completely dead?

it’s better to avoid automated backlinks now. most automated tools create low quality, spammy links. google is good at detecting these and often ignores them or sometimes penalizes the site. backlinks still matter, but quality is more important than quantity. a few relevant, real links are far more effective than hundreds of automated ones.

They’re not completely dead, but they’re risky and not that effective anymore.

Automated links can still move rankings a bit, but it’s usually short-term and low-quality. Most of them get ignored or can hurt your site over time.

If you’re building a real site, better to avoid them. Focus on a few good backlinks instead of hundreds of spammy ones.

Some people still use automation on test or churn sites, but for anything serious, it’s not worth it.

Automated backlinks can still move the needle, but quality matters more than ever. If you automate, keep it focused on genuine outreach and editorial placements, not mass spam. In the end, it's quality links from real sites that count.

honestly, automated backlinks in 2026 are a double edged sword, but mostly risky if you don’t know what you’re doing. the old style, like blasting links with tools, blog comments, directories, all that is pretty much dead. google is way better at spotting patterns and just ignores or filters those links now. i’ve tested this myself, sometimes you see a short boost, but it never sticks. rankings either drop or just stall...where automation still works is backend stuff, like prospecting, tracking, outreach follow ups, not actual link placement.
my take, avoid automated link building for links themselves. use it to speed up process, real links still need human touch.

if you spy all the backlinks profiles from ahrefs / semrush you will see a pattern. 80% of webmasters directly or indirectly using automation and its now even more than before cause its the AI ERA so automation is king. I have been doing automated link building and my main income is totally built on automated backlinks. i have never manually built more than 100 backlinks for the last 20 years total.

I have been using magic submitter to Magic deamon to Xevil first versions to GSA SER (and i am still using it) and ranker x which i have a life time lisence to money robot and the list goes on .. damn how come i forgot the senuke era... anyway what i wanted to tell is automation is just about doing something hands off. it doesnt mean its bad or good or effective or ineffective. If you have a good seo stratergy theres lot of ways to automate it... what you should ask is what stratergies are dead, thats the real question.. If you are new or want to try just start on tiered link building.

build articles , forums kind of platforms and create a second tier to pass the links. it works all the time and is super risk free. Been doing it for years damn i came back here to BHW after a long time and nowdays seems everyone panic with every big G rollout

Automated backlinks are mostly outdated and risky, so it’s better to focus on high-quality, manual link building.

Hello
I’ve been learning about backlinks and came across tools that create links automatically, but I’m not sure how effective they are today. Are automated backlinks still useful, or is it better to avoid them now?
From what I’ve seen, automated backlinks used to be more common years ago, but now they don’t seem to work as well and can sometimes create low-quality links. In most cases I’ve had better results focusing on things like guest posts or contextual links on real sites. They take more effort, but the links tend to be more stable and useful for rankings.

Automated backlinks are mostly ignored or risky today, so focus on building real, high quality links instead

blasting automated links straight to your main money site is basically suicide for your rankings now and will get you penalized almost instantly by google. they aren't completely dead though, most people here just use tools like gsa or rankerx strictly for tier 2 and tier 3 link building now, like powering up web 2.0s or force-indexing parasite seo articles. if you are just starting out definitely avoid pointing any of that automated spam at a domain you actually care about keeping alive long term.

Nowadays, automated backlinks are hardly effective and can even harm your SEO if detected by Google or other search engines; instead, it’s better to focus on building natural, high-quality links through valuable content, collaborations with reputable sites, and engaging with your target community, as these backlinks are not only more sustainable but also safely improve search rankings over the long term.

From what I've learned, automated link building tools currently carry extremely high risks and their effectiveness is drastically decreasing, it's best to avoid them. Google is now very smart at identifying spam links, mass links from forums or low quality comments. Abusing them can easily lead to website penalties. Instead of chasing after virtual numbers, you should focus on real backlinks and quality content on reputable platforms

Google has something called SpamBrain and it is an AI-based, machine-learning spam prevention system of Google. One of the many things it does is analyze for link (backlinks) patterns.
And, do not forget that automated backlink tools generate huge numbers of backlinks which are very often low-quality, irrelevant, and these are surely nowadays detected very easily by Google's SpamBrain.
We all do not want any of our websites to get penalized by Google.
The workaround that works for me by using the automated tools to create links to a Tier 2 property (like a guest post or a news article) that already links to my website(s), instead of doing the automation directly to my website(s). But, please kindly do your own further research as well. Because we are dealing with algorithms where one man's SEO results could be different from the results of another man who performed the exact same SEO steps or strategies.

I find that automated backlink generation tools nowadays do more harm than good because Google is becoming increasingly intelligent in identifying and penalizing spam links, making it easy for websites to be removed from search results. Instead of using tools to generate backlinks in bulk, focus on quality. Links from reputable sources or through valuable content are still the best for SEO. Manual backlink building, although slower, is sustainable and absolutely safe for your project

if you think like that, blast it to your competitor lol

They still work for quick boosts but mostly short term  easy to overdo and get flagged better as support links not main strategy :smirk:

Not dead, but the use case changed completely.

Automated links directly to your money site in 2026 is a fast way to get it penalized. Google got really good at identifying automated link patterns, anchor text distribution that looks unnatural, links from sites that exist only to pass links.

Where automated links still work - tier 2. You build real links to your money site, then blast automated links at those tier 2 pages to amplify them. The automated stuff never touches your main site directly. This still works and a lot of people here use this approach.

The other use case is for throwaway/parasite pages where you don't care if the domain gets burned. Rank fast, make money, move on.

If you're just starting out though, don't touch automated links yet. Learn what a good link looks like before you start mass producing bad ones. You'll understand the difference better once you've done some manual link building first

They are effective in ranking short term. On the long term they can hurt and penalize your website/blog in the eyes of Google.

The tier 2 approach vakage mentioned is the smartest way to use automated links in 2026. Pointing them directly at your money site is a recipe for a manual penalty or algorithmic devaluation. But using them to amplify existing backlinks — like boosting the authority of a guest post that points to you — is a different story. The automation itself isn't the problem, it's the proximity to your main site. AI tools now make it easier to identify which of your existing links are worth amplifying this way. The key filter: only automate to sites that already have some real authority and traffic, not freshly-created PBNs.
