Are automated backlinks still useful or completely dead?

Hello
I’ve been learning about backlinks and came across tools that create links automatically, but I’m not sure how effective they are today. Are automated backlinks still useful, or is it better to avoid them now?

Technically you could spam them and get some traffic, but things like automated blog comments is something Google has caught up on.
If you have some creativity you could do something with AI :)
 
Automated backlinks can still give a quick ranking push, but most of them are low quality and come with real risk. In 2026, search engines care much more about relevance, genuine traffic, and natural link profiles, so spammy automated links are more likely to harm your site than help it.
 
I have 5 years of experience. They won't harm your site, but they won't bring much either; I hope that helps.

It depends what you're trying to achieve. If you want to rank a local service or mom'n'pop shop then they aren't going to be much help. If you're trying to rank some more 'creative' parasites in the casino niches they're almost certain to be used somewhere in the process.
 
Automated backlinks are not dead, but they've shifted from direct "Money Site" use to serving as a high-volume Tier 2 or Tier 3 engine to power up your high-quality manual guest posts and niche edits.

If that were the case and Google did 'penalize' them, I could just fire up GSA and dump a load of it's worst links on my competitors to tank them. In reality most sites never get an actual 'penalty', they're just weak or their link profile is weak.
 
They still work if you are trying to rank low competitve niche. If you use them in multi tiered link strategy they will move the ranking needle. But for high competitive niche you will need some high quality links.
 
I've tested a bit and honestly automated backlinks aren't useful now.
Most of them are low quality and either get ignored or don't help much long term. They might give a small boost but it's not stable.
I'd focus more on a few real, relevant links instead of bulk automation.
 
I think it's more likely that automatic links haven't worked as well as they used to. You could run a gsa or something similar directly on a money-making site, and it would work. There's no point in doing that now; it won't improve your rankings, and it could cause problems. But I've seen them work quite well as an auxiliary layer. They help with indexing, give weight to links higher up the chain. Not as a direct promotion tool, but as part of the structure. The problem is that many people still use them the old-fashioned way: they run them directly on the main pages, and then wonder why they don't work or why they got any results.
So the question isn't whether they're still around. The question is whether you understand their place in the system. If so, the tool works. If not, it's best not to touch it.

Automated backlinks can still work in some cases, but they're definitely much riskier now than before. In my opinion, using them carefully for lower-tier links while focusing on quality backlinks for the main site is a safer approach.

Automated backlinks aren’t completely obsolete they can still be useful for indexing, tiered link-building strategies, and churn-and-burn projects, particularly when targeting low-competition keywords.
 
Stay far away from automated link tools if you care about your main website
google spam filters catch that junk instantly and will completely wipe out your rankings
The only guys still using those bots are just blasting lower tier links to help index other stuff
