Same ISP proxy questions every week so here's a quick breakdown from our team. No fluff, just what actually matters.

What is an ISP Proxy?

IP address registered under a real ISP (Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, etc.) but hosted on server infrastructure. Not from someone's home router.

Websites see it as residential. You get datacenter speed and stability. Usually static, same IP for weeks or months.

Purchased in format: Pay per IP / per month

ISP vs Residential vs Datacenter

IP Source
  • Residential: Real home users, mobile devices via SDKs
  • ISP: Real ISP address ranges, hosted on servers
  • Datacenter: Hosting companies (AWS, OVH, Hetzner)

Behavior
  • Residential: Rotating, can drop when source device goes offline
  • ISP: Static, stable 24/7
  • Datacenter: Static but flagged by most platforms on sight

Trust Level
  • Residential: Highest
  • ISP: Strong, much better than DC
  • Datacenter: Lowest, many platforms block entire DC ranges

"Static Residential" = ISP?

Not always. "Static" means it doesn't rotate. "ISP" means it's owned by an actual internet provider. Most ISP proxies are static which is why sellers label them "ISP (static residential)" but not every sticky IP is ISP owned. Some providers sell long sticky sessions on regular residential peers and call it static residential. Different thing.

When ISP proxies work

Account management / Anti-detect browsers
  • One static IP per profile, consistent identity across days
  • Logins, cookies, sessions don't break from IP rotation
  • Residential fails here because IP drops randomly, sessions break, accounts flag

Streaming (Netflix, Disney+, Spotify)
  • 4K movie = 7-10GB. On residential at $5/GB that's $50 per movie. ISP is flat monthly cost
  • Also works for regional pricing (YouTube Premium in Argentina, Spotify in Turkey)
  • Residential is financially insane for streaming

Gaming / Ban bypass
  • Heavy bandwidth, flat monthly cost vs per GB pricing
  • Stable connection, no drops mid game
  • Fresh static IP = new identity after ban

API / Parsing / 24/7 monitoring
  • No random drops, predictable cost
  • Consistent IP looks like legit server traffic
  • Per GB pricing makes 24/7 residential operations way too expensive

When ISP proxies fail

Mass account creation / autoreg
  • Small pool = accounts cluster on same subnets, one flagged subnet bans hundreds of accs at once
  • You need millions of diverse IPs, that's residential territory

Mass automation (likes, follows, DMs at scale)
  • Same clustering problem, too many actions from too few IPs
  • Platforms notice fast

Media buying at scale (FB Ads, Google Ads)
  • Many ISP subnets already flagged/banned for ad account creation
  • Facebook and Google track ISP patterns hard on new accounts

How to verify you got real ISP proxies

  1. Connect through the proxy
  2. Visit trusted IP data website.
  3. Check ASN and Organization
  4. Should show real ISP name (Comcast, Verizon, Vodafone). If it shows OVH, Hetzner, AWS you got DC proxies at ISP price

30 seconds. Do it every time.

Bottom line

ISP doesn't replace residential. They cover different jobs:
  • Need stability, long sessions, account management = ISP
  • Need rotation, mass creation, scraping = Residential
  • Best setups use both depending on the task

solid breakdown. one thing i'd add is that the "static residential" label has become a marketing mess. half the providers selling "static residential" are just repackaging datacenter IPs under ISP ASNs they leased. looks clean on paper but the subnet history tells a different story. the ASN check tip is crucial.

i'd go one step further and also check the subnet on fraud score databases. some ISP ranges have been so heavily abused by previous users that even a legit ISP IP from that block gets flagged instantly. also worth noting for anyone reading: ISP proxies are amazing for account management but the pool sizes are tiny compared to resi.

if your provider only has a few hundred IPs in a region, you're sharing subnets with other buyers doing the same thing. that clustering risk is real even on ISP. would definitely read a pt.2 on specific setups if you do one.
 
So when you say ISPs are not good for Media Buying, you imply Residential proxies are? Doesn't the rotating nature eventually cause stability problems? Do you have any examples of suited providers, cause it seems like they all use similar terminology for different proxy types
 
Nice write-up, especially the part about matching the proxy type to the use case. One thing I'd add is that people often focus only on the IP type, while subnet diversity matters just as much. Two "clean" ISP IPs from the same small subnet can behave very differently from IPs spread across different ranges, depending on the platform. Worth keeping in mind when choosing a provider.
 
I usually treat ISP as the stay logged in proxy, not the hit everything proxy. For long account sessions it is great. For broad scraping or lots of geo switching I still prefer residential because the pool is wider.
