Are exact match domains making a comeback?

Lately I’ve noticed a few exact match domains ranking faster than branded domains in certain niches.
Especially in:

• Local services
• Gambling
• Micro-niche affiliate sites

Do you think EMDs are gaining weight again, or is it just low competition?
Would love to know if anyone tested this recently.

Micro-niche affiliate sites

for some weird reason EMDs have always worked for micro-niche sites. I've had a 12-page site in a micro-niche (something like "ice sculpting" for example) that was outranking 2 very popular and established sites at that time.

It's true that I wasn't ranking for very competitive keywords, only for smaller / long tail ones. But even so, I was ranking without backlinks or traffic, just with simple on-page SEO, and good site speed and UX, but that was around 2020-2021, so about 5 years ago, so I'm not sure what it's like today, but yeah... EMDs and micro-niche sites seem to have a very beautiful love affair

Comeback? Did they ever go away? I even see long tail keywords as domain names which is funny but they end up working for some.

low competition keywords and micro sites go well with EMD domains still. but it is mostly being used on bing now a days allot of website resellers reach out to me with websites only indexing and generating traffic from bing and when i look more into it it is an EMD domain

Yes they do for niches that are smaller and less competitive. For bigger, high competitive niches they don't. And that's because the smaller the niche the more specialised are the websites/blogs that cater to them.
