I have seen some sellers selling $1 backlinks on BHW and other places. How reliable are these type of backlinks ? Have you ever ranked a site with these type of backlinks ?

In most cases those are valueless cause those are rigged high DA DR sites with no traffic.

I agree with Seo Captain that as long as these low-cost backlinks are part of a diversified strategy, they're unlikely to cause harm. However, I'd like to add that it's crucial to assess the quality of these backlinks beyond just their price point. Are they coming from relevant niches, and are they indexed by Google? I've seen some sellers offering $1 backlinks that are actually just redirects or expired domains with no real authority. For diversification purposes, I think it's better to focus on acquiring a mix of mid-to-high-tier backlinks from authoritative sources, rather than relying solely on cheap links. Can anyone share their experience with using these low-cost backlinks as part of a larger SEO strategy?

Here is how you check this, few will ever do, bhut ah well.
Ahrefs----Site Explorer-----Organic traffic
Look for:
Monthly organic traffic (not “traffic value”)
Traffic trend (flat or cliff diving = rubbish, baloney)
Similarweb, if it says <5K visits per month on a “DA 70” site, lol, no, keep away
SEMrush
Cross-check organic keywords and traffic
DA 50+ with less than 500 organic visits per month means artificial authority
Ranking keywords:
Ahrefs it is called organic keywords, on Semruish positions or some such. If the site ranks for nothing meaningful and only ranks for its own brand name and for spam terms (“free pdf”, “crack”, “watch online”) ,, thats is a zombie domain.
Topical relevance
High DA cannot matter if let us say you are in online gambling and the link comes from general news and sucvh BS like lifestyle blog or some banner there "write for us! all niches accepted"
Check Ahrefs------top pages
Look at categories and historical content
Missing relevance = Google discounts it heavily, and that is a good thing.
Link placement quality
Most such links are in "sitewide footer" or author bio spam or sponsored post blocks with 500 outbound links. and / or hidden behind JS or noindex pages.
View source if you know a bit about web console, count external links on the page, ask chatgtp to give you a quick js loop you can drop into the console, thakes a few sseconds.
Inspect if the page is indexed, just drop site:URL into Google. If the page is not indexed, that link has less value than 1 usd and probably negative value since you have wasted time.
Outbound link profile
These sites usually link out to:
Pills....Crypto scams and adult. Look at anchors, not just domains
If you see viagra,casino,loan etc Google already classified the site as link trash.
Traffic geography
Fake authority sites often have 90% traffic from and do not call me any named for this, because it is what it is:
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and random African countries

If you target EU/US and traffic is 95% Asie, well....
History abuse (the dredged expired domain trick)
Domain used to be legit, then expires. SEO seller rebuilds it as link farm
Here you kinda need wayback machine.Check for topic change and gaps in history.
Ahrefs------Referring domains trend, sudden spike means it is a rebuilt "PBN"

You will find that Google Does not use any of these terms in this table.
Unless I have missed something, I took 30 minutes to write this....sticky this somewhere, I believe this could help at very least to re educate the non malicious spammers who just do not know better, and it will for sure help some potential victims to not drink that SEO koolaide.
From my experience they are all Indian sellers, either scamming you by not delivering any links or they just spam your links in non relevant sites which only affects your site in a bad way, I have bought super cheap links when I first started and didn't know how things worked, I bought them on Fiverr and SeoClerk and it affected my domain/site in a really bad way. Even the more expensive ones are sketchy IMO.

This is what most could afford. Big companies have the budget to afford high quality links and they are the ones ranking at top spots these days.

Mate, stop it, you are biased, you have the same stuff in your signature.
Just becsause it is affordable, does not mean it is any good, it is actively toxic and harmful, do not sugarcoat it. I believe a 7.62mm bullet is also affordable, does not make it a healthy meal.
How about what I did, reach out to relevant businesses and be an affiliate and speak directly with them until I actually got real backlinks with them, going to expos and meet the real publishers etc. You know, the way it is really done.
Do not spread BS here about inequality based on price, you either have a decent product, or you do not. Do not turn this around.

Imo, They’re unreliable and mostly noise
$1 links can move churn sites short-term, but they don’t build trust and often cause issues on real projects

Most cases those links, as others said, are spam posted or it's on a PBN the seller controls that is riddled with tons of post and links. So these have little value, maybe for diversification but probably more of a risk (since they usually have 1000s of links on those sites to spammy sites).
Those links also don't last more than a year, if even that.

For tier 2 links they are good.

Don't go for cheap, spend good for good results, these cheap backlinks will make your site spammy.
