Hey guys, started this site around 5 months ago, started to get a few clicks a day and ranking for more KWs in Ahrefs. Today I've seen a massive drop in impressions and clicks.

Does this mean the site has been hit with a penalty or is it normal and I just need to post more content and build links?

looks like a penalty, but it's probably one that will fix itself in a few weeks (google tends to penalize small sites during this time of the year to reward the big-budgeted dudes with the traffic stolen from you), and - if that's the cause - I'd say keep working on your site as usual and wait for it to come back in January after the shopping season is over...

Same thing, i have a 7 months old website, went from 15-20k impressions and around 120 clicks per day to 20 clicks and very little impressions.

You should monitor it for another week. If the website continues to have low rankings and few impressions, it may be facing issues and will need fixes, such as adjusting the content or controlling the backlinks.

this does NOT look like a penalty.
What you’re seeing is very common for a site that’s only ~5 months old.
A few points based on your data:

• Average position ~27 means most of your keywords are sitting around page 3–4.
  At this range, impressions and clicks can fluctuate a lot as Google tests rankings.
• The spike and then drop in impressions usually means Google temporarily expanded visibility for more long-tail queries, then re-evaluated and pulled some of that back. That’s normal.
• CTR ~0.9% is completely normal for an average position in the high 20s.
  If this were a penalty, you’d typically see:
  
  • a sharp and sustained drop across the whole site
  • average position falling hard
  • or a manual action notice in GSC
• Your chart looks more like volatility + re-testing, not a sudden demotion.

What I’d do next:

• Keep publishing content, especially long-tail and supporting articles
• Improve internal linking to pages that already have impressions
• Check GSC at the query level to see which keywords lost or gained impressions
• Don’t panic-build links to “fix” it — that often makes things worse

When it would be concerning:

• Impressions and clicks keep dropping for 3–4 weeks straight
• Average position collapses site-wide
• You see a manual action in Search Console

This is often normal during early growth. Google tests visibility, then pulls back.

This kind of dip is pretty common around the 3–6 month mark and doesn’t automatically mean a penalty, especially if you’re still seeing keywords indexed. I’d first check GSC for any manual actions or indexing issues, then focus on improving content quality, internal linking, and consistency before assuming the worst.
