subscribed today. i too am starting a cold calling campaign today. started out this morning. a little uneasy listening to folks telling me that they have already paid $1200 for a website that isn't live yet and my offer is $19 set up fee and $49.00 per month for hosting. doing it this way because i want the month income not just the one offs. good luck to you. any updates on your results from yesterday?

Ahh cold calling... that sure takes me back to my Boiler-room Mortgage Refi Job..... Happy fun times I had at at that place, getting drunk while telling people what to do, everyone on the phone, yelling walking around.... u guys should have seen that... it was a work hard, play harder attitude all around.

THANKS Been busy with all these free evaluations, i did well about 60 calls, got 4 presentations to make and 2 contracts already written up - (400) and (200) Monthly

Is this your first time doing this? Or did you just recently get the itch to start doing local seo consulting?

Any resources you've found helpful in getting started (like Local Business Money Machines which can be found here on BHW)?

For the evaluations I'm confused. Are you emailing those to them? So how many of those do you need to do, or did you already do them for the each of the 60 people before you called them?

Thanks a ton for sharing in this thread already. Very helpful

I have been doing this since 2007, been managing clients , keeping some , losing some after contract ends, and one even went out of business

I call them with there info up on my screen handy and a brief report on what they need to improve on, i found if you have this info handy it makes it easier to keep em online

I then get there email address and then email the report or try to get a consultation date for me to come into their office

I have in total 10 solid clients monthly and want more

Nah i actually havent read any of the guides just been doing my thing, i found out if you just sit there and start calling anyone just to call and hope its not as good as if you take a day, pick a target, learn the keywords, learn the traffic, discuss the competitors with them, so instead of making 1000 untargeted calls, you can make 30-40 quality ones and have a much better success rate, hey if i make 1000 calls, i may get 2 sales, BUT if i make 60 calls and get even 1, id take that over making 1000 untargeted calls and getting 2 sales any day.

This month i branched out and leased an office and have to really work hard to get new clients so i can cover my new expenses

WOW 1 FOR 1 TODAY , LOL,first call, he knew what seo was and am going to write a propsal on a web redesign and seo campaign he even gamme his comepetitros sites to get keywords from

I'm sure some people could use the help!

simple str8 to the point, hi my names joe , im calling about your site this will take a minute of your time, its about seo and yadda yadda, ill give a free eval, name, email thats it, end call. send email wait a day or two , follow up

I did a lot of cold calling this summer, and it is a %$^^. Selling face 2 face is a lot easier. People have a lot harder time being rude or dismissing you in person. I would give door 2 door sales a shot. D2D will give you the opportunity to really show them what you can do, and if you have something like clearwire internet you can show them your results. You'll be shocked at how many small businessmen actually understand IM--- I've found that service industry business owners are well versed on IM.
The problem ive seen is most places have no soliciting sign on the door

not only that the walk of shame on getting rejected and having everyone look at you and laugh

This is a great thread. I do almost the exact same thing. I also did the same thing as you and rented an office, lOl. I even hired two part time college students.

Good luck with your business.

Thanks man! you too!

that is my next step, how are they working out for you, i guess you spend 300-500 weekly as long as they get you 5-10 sales a month your golden

They are doing good. I just give them a script and they call. I am just using them to set up free consultations and then I take it from there.

Employees cold call Prospects
offer Free consultation
Prospects go to site
Fill out short free consultation form
I call them back within 24 hours

In all honesty, if I can get them to the Free consultation form, they are pretty much sold.

One thing I have found that works really great is when you choose your target business, make a specials page on your site and offer just that type of business a special package or two packages. I have found that converts great.

Good luck and a few thoughts.

I'm relatively new to internet marketing and SEO, but have closed a lot of business working in traditional media marketing/advertising.

As others have said, face to face is the way to go. I have always found prospects more receptive once you're in their palce of business. It's just to easy to blow off a person on the phone. This doesn't mean that you can count on being able to get the decision maker's attention and make a presentation on your first visit. Create something to leave behind. Get some contact info for the person you need to talk to. This way, you're better prepared on the follow-up, and the prospect is hopefully more familiar with what you're offering.

If you're going to strictly go the phone cold-calling route, there is one thing that I have found to be somewhat helpful, but that takes more time. Devote your first call to establishing who you need to be talking to and don't go any further. Secretaries and other employees are conditioned to keep sales people away from the boss, so if you start with "can I speak to the owner," they will be more likely to blow you off. Instead, be honest, but don't ask for the owner. Tell them what company you're with, and that you're "updating your database." Ask who the decision maker is and make note of it. The next time you call, you'll sound more authoritative by being able to say "Hi, could I speak to Joe please?" Don't be affraid to leave a succinct voice-mail for the decision maker either, but don't expect a call back. All if this just makes your name and company more familiar. If the boss has heard two voicemails from you, he might be more apt to take the third call when his secretary says "John from SEO Company is on line one." If you're a complete stranger, they're much less likely to take that call.

Finally, at first you need to focus less on what you have to offer and more on what areas the prospect wishes they could improve upon. Some people will be interested if you go in guns blazing, but many more won't be interested because they won't immediately understand how what you offer can improve their business. If you take some time to establish that, it will be much easier to explain the benefits to them on another call.

Hope this was helpful. Good luck and keep us posted.
