Quick question for anyone working w/ local SEO or GMB stuff…
I’ve been hearing mixed things about geo tagging photos before uploading them to Google Business Profile. Some people swear it helps rankings, others say Google strips the data anyway so it’s pointless.
I’m honestly on the fence. Do you guys actually geo tag your photos for your business or clients? Or is it one of those tasks that "sounds cool" but doesn’t really move the needle?
And do you think it actually does anything anymore in 2025?
Just looking for some real world feedback, not the typical "it depends" SEO answer lol. Appreciate any insights

Geo-tagging photos for Google Business Profiles doesn't really move the needle anymore-Google strips most metadata and there's no solid evidence it boosts rankings. It won't hurt, but focusing on strong GBP activity, reviews and local citations gives much better results in 2025.

That debate is hilarious, it's been going on forever. Honestly, anyone telling you it’s a major ranking factor is selling you snake oil. Google strips that EXIF data when you upload it to GMB anyway.

We geotag maybe one or two photos for new clients just for peace of mind, but we don't bother beyond that. Your time is far better spent getting high-quality reviews with keywords, or optimizing your actual GMB description. That's where the real rank boost comes from, not metadata games.

Yes, it still matters for local SEO. Geo-tagged photos provide a small but direct ranking signal by verifying your physical location and relevance to the area. It's a minor factor, but an easy win in competitive local markets. Google still uses this data.

Google is smart; they strip the EXIF data as soon as you upload the photo, especially for the Geo-tagging part. Your rankings are 100% defined by NAP consistency and review volume/quality. However, many guys still do it because it’s a fast, cheap task that adds to the overall completeness of the GBP profile. It doesn't hurt, but it's low ROI compared to getting more real reviews.

It doesn't hurt to geo-tag, but it's a low-impact task; Google primarily uses your verified business address for local ranking, and other factors like reviews and GBP completeness matter far more. I still geo-tag high-quality exterior/storefront photos for that extra contextual signal, but I don't waste time tagging every generic indoor shot. Focus your effort on getting more customer photo uploads, which Google values highly.

Geo tagging’s pretty overrated now since Google strips the data and cares more about fresh pics and real GBP activity

Used to matter a lot more when Google leaned more on EXIF data. These days, it's religated as a lightweight trust signal at best I think. Google strips or ignores most EXIF data on upload and rankings come far more from other criteria like categories, CTR, overall GBP activity, etc. Geo-tag when it's convenient though but don't give it too much weight, If the core local signals aren't strong, geo-tagging probs won't help eitherway.

Geo-tagging helps to get more customers (as they think you're doing more tasks regardless of whether it's useful or not).

For ranking, it's useless as Google strips exif data and can directly read images to find information like people and places. So, it's better to have visual information in images (like buildings, billboards, signboards, etc.) instead of metadata.

Geo-tagging doesn’t really matter now Google strips EXIF data, so it won’t boost rankings. Focus on original photos, reviews, and strong local signals instead.

i have a suggestion: if you still struggle, take 10 miniutes to use Ai to build a simple script to auto-add iamge meta to every image of your workflow, so you can move on and forget about the whole thing forever.

In practical terms, you get better impact from correct NAP and categories and strong on page local signals, also ensure images are created at or near the business areas

geo tagging GBP photos doesnt really help Google strips the data focus on high-quality lcation-relevant images and accurate busines info instead that actually impacts local SEO

From what I’ve seen, geo-tagging photos doesn’t seem to be a strong ranking factor on its own anymore. I still see people do it as part of their routine, but most results appear to come from stronger signals like relevance, reviews, and overall profile quality.
Curious if anyone has recent tests or observations from 2025 that show otherwise.
