Monetizing my novel site

Hello friends,

I own a low traffic platform for reading web novels. The novels are mostly translations from asia and abandoned hobbyist novels.

The website isn't really white hat, but I'm trying to be as low-key as possible.

The websites gets about 400 pageviews per day and I'm looking into ways to monetize it without hurting my SEO.

I know there are ad networks which accept "shady" sites like mine, but they use pop-under ads, which might hurt ux and seo. If possible, I would like to use good old banners.

I also read about opening a shop for the websites, but it such a big time investment...

Do you have good ways to monetize such websites as mine?

When I started monetizing websites, I first explored different ways to bring high-quality traffic to the site. Once I reached about 1000 impressions per day, I started using monetization methods that counted my earnings based on impressions.
So, my recommendation is to wait until the site grows a bit more before investing heavily in its content.

For a novel site, pops + push usually work best since it’s content-heavy traffic.
I’m using AdMaven on one of my content sites — nothing crazy, but CPM is steady and payouts are on time.
Worth testing alongside one more network and keeping what performs best.

Found and copy pasted them. I'm not using popular or professional novels. Only niche and hobbyist ones. However, there is almost no traffic in that niche.

Make merch on sites like spreadshirt, and threadless, and link them as banner ads. Get revenue indirectly, from fans of the comics, who will happily pay for merch inspired new designs and chars.

Monetization is tricky with low-traffic and non-licensed content, but you can still focus on non-intrusive options.
Simple banner ads, donations/Patreon, or a basic membership for ad-free reading tend to work without hurting UX.
Growing traffic first will make any monetization perform better.

You could try affiliate links for novels/merch, subtle banner ads, or Patreon-style support—keeps UX clean and SEO safe without heavy pop-ups.
