Basic SEO practices for newbies:

does Bold (strong), underline, italic hold ANY value at all??

and imo, meta description is needed. it needs to be 3 short or 2 longish sentences.
this is even noted in google webmaster tools. it will give you a warning if its to long or to short!!

Yeah, standard for me on using description meta is all about mastering the most bang for your buck in 30 - 50 words. My common practice is to keep that within 3 - 5 sentences and it hasn't let me down yet.

Make every word count though.

Since I can't use my keyword in my domain name, it's taken already, can I use it as a subdomain and optimize some internal page. For example:

www.domainname.com/keyword

If I use my keyword as a subdomain whether this will improve my ranking?

Doesn't really matter where/how you use it in the domain.

I do a ton of seo business work and have never been effected by the google slaps or anything else because I stick to one core concept:

All search engines are in the information business and operate on 3 major elements:

Keywords a site is catalogged within the search engine's db system.

Onpage content relevancy to those keywords.

Traffic searching for those keywords and finding that relevant content.

It doesn't matter what you call the site/domain. All of the wild names of the biggest commercial sites prove that hands down. It is all about relevant connections of keywords and content onpage using the keyword as the subject, not the literal words needing to be mentioned like in old keyword stuffing days.

Examples: Google, ebay, twitter, digg, amazon, as well as countless others.

Make the name sake of your site something people will remember and want to visit again. Let the content, keywords and meta tags do the work for the traffic connecting with each other, as that is their purpose.

As for my personal opinion, I still use keyword meta tags, always have and always will. Even with google's own mention of using them more for adwords, it is still the backbone of the system for them. I am even willing to bet that they are claiming the lowering interest in the meta because they want to push adwords supporting sites higher in their search engine system, as well as to have more people use adwords in thinking that it has something to do with it other than extra marketing income for google...which it clearly doesn't.

Use your keyword meta tags, research the traffic to your keywords, updating them often and create keyword relevant copy onpage that supports your target keywords correctly.

For now if your thinking about structures just remember -
Silos - when you create a link silo, all the silos have to be independent of each other, NO cross linking at all. If they were natural they wouldn't be linking to each other. You're trying to create multiple authority sites that are linking to you. Also, be sure to use unique, high quality, relevant content for each of the silos.

Im not trying to pick holes in any of the theories posted, but just wanted to make a comment on the topic of keyword density;

I dont quite agree with 2%-4% ekyword density. Im working on a site at the moment with around 10 pages, and I'm targetting 3 keywords on each page. For each keyword I look at the top placed site on google, and analyse exactly what they are doing;

For example, if the keyword is "wibble wobble", and the top site has a keyword density of 5%, I go for around 5.5%. I've seen sites using 15% keyword density, and using the same keyword in every single one of the ALT tags....and ranking #1.

As you say, it isnt an exact science, but I think looking what the oposition is doing is crucial.

I'd also like to mention DMOZ. Getting yourself listed in DMOZ and yahoo directory is a big help to any site.

One final one from me;

When choosing keywords to target, try to go for a maximum of 3 per page. You can make life a lot easier by choosing a 3 word key phrase which cross matches. For example

If you target is electric guitars;

keyphrase1:electric guitar
keyphrase2:new electric guitar
keyphrase3:electric guitar amp

You can then cleverly word your text to use all 3 keywords easily. eg imagine this line of text

"if you are looking for a new electric guitar or new electric guitar amp you have come to the right place".

You have used the keyword electric guitar twice, new electric guitar once, and electric guitar amp once.

Hope that you like this tip.

Sorry to change the topic from keyword SEO but I have been wondering if Google gives greater weight to domains and pages with dedicated IPs as opposed to shared IPs?

No i dont think that would be the case at all.
Say you are basing this on a small regular 5 to 10 page site.
if you have a 1000-10000 page site
then maybe you need more room and have a dedi
but no weight

Yeah, you are absolutely right on this one. It holds ZERO weight in favor or against a domain name for rank pull in google or any other search engine for that matter.

Im not sure but i think it has to do with how many over all words there are.
The sites that i have at #1 right now are MUCH more than 2-4%.
I basically use the keyword every time i should (rather than: that, they, them, it, ect) puts me at a high percentage those. Im guessing 8 to 15%.

I still have 2 questions:

Does bold/italic have any effect at all?

Which is better for internal linking. Ive read both are better
the entire url like hxxp://mysiteblahblah.com/thepageiwant
OR
/thepageiwant only?

Nice post. Can someone link a thread to a good linkwheel guide? I'm starting adsense with some youtube videos and I got to find ways to make it up to at least 500 hits. My goal would be to get it to 1000.

Using a keyword in your domain name....how important is this?

My mate who builds websites says it's no longer important in google's eyes. Is he right?

Hi, I was thinking for a training of SEO but after reading your article I can say that its not too much tough. Can I learn it without any training? Please give me some other tips.
