Instead of creating backlinks, he focused on creating internal links from one page to another and it helped him get a lot more traffic.

You can search in the forum for guides on interlinking or plugins to handle it for you. If you use plugins, don't forget to take a backup first as it could be irreversible.

Internal linking is good but it will not work alone without proper seo.

Sure! Example: I had a guide on “basic SEO tips” that barely ranked. After interlinking it with 10 related posts (keyword research, on-page, etc.), traffic doubled and rankings jumped from page 3 to page 1. Simple tweak, big impact.

Wait for the 2-3 months gap, and you'll see even more traffic,
Build a "few" (depending on competition, ofc) solid links instead of "random backlinks" and you'll be surprised as well
