I don't think you are 100% accurate there.

Wikipedia links lend credibility to a site so there is value there.

But I agree that a page of your own, which I have had in the past for my own stuff, is extremely valuable.

They are good because if you try to add a non interesting website to it you will be banned immediately (or really fast) by moderators. Search Engines are aware of that and consider that links that stays on Wikipedia are good quality.
