[Journey] Scaling an Authority website to 10K a month (and beyond)

Quick update:

- The DP sales have died away, but between 19th and 21st Feb I made 6 sales of DP, meaning 2 sales a day, which is something I haven't seen in a while... Let's see if something similar repeats anytime soon.

- I stopped some Google ads campaigns that have not generated a single sale in last 60 days. Still continue to run others and hope to start 2 more soon, but my ad spent went down roughly 50%.

- Raptive RPM continues to be crazy good these days:

raptive_high_rpm.png
Imagine it's February, I have 90% less traffic than in peak times of this website, and still make almost $70 from ads on one day. Almost unbelievable really.

- I continue working hard on my new project in the niche of my authority website. Currently about 55-60% done with all work that I plan to do on this before letting it sit for the rest of the year and see what happens in autumn. Writing goes great on some days, and I have to push on some others, but that's how it has always been... In any case, overall I like the idea of that site very much, so let's see if users/google eventually likes it, or it ends a complete flop.

- I accepted a rare gig to make a website for someone who's quite close to me. It isn't a difficult site to make, will be more design work than content writing, and maybe a nice thing to add some variety to my daily working routine. I hope to work on this one 1hour/day for next 2 weeks and then be done with it.

- There aren't any other important news regarding the experiments I haven't mentioned here.

Take care all, and let me know if someone managed to achieve the HCU recovery :D

A small update and maybe an inspiration for some of you:

Yesterday, we actually made even 3 sales of DP on PayPal:
pp_3_sales.png

Now, the funny thing is, that just one of those sales, the one worth $19 is from my authority website, from paid traffic (Google ads).

The other 2 sales are actually from a pretty small website that I've had for years. This website made 5 sales in last 20 days already:
small_site_stats.png

Here are the traffic stats for this website in the last 28 days:
small_site_traffic.png
- That's for last 28 days, so in the last 20 it was maybe like 250 visitors.

From 250 visitors, the website has generated $150 in sales. That's RPS of $600.

What I try to demonstrate with this example is that while IM and SEO isn't a goldmine anymore, there are still interesting opportunities out there, and sometimes you can make nice side income with just a few hundred visitors monthly. And that some people still buy eBooks...

This is something I have been speculating about a lot lately. While in the period from 2018-2024 the name of the game was authority websites & ads, now, considering the Google updates and how Google treats any niche site with ads and a lot of content, maybe the game has changed a bit into the favor of micro niche sites, or small niche sites, again.

Because it seems that with certain structure and content quality, Google still gives them a chance in the SERPs... You make a nice small website, maybe 10 pages of HQ content, less than 5K words in total, build a product (or even link as an affiliate to some 3rd party product) and that's it. Rinse and repeat....

That's it for today. Take care everybody and let me know if any of you experienced something similar with a small website recently :).

Brief February 2025 update:

raptive_feb_2025.png

- Except of December 2024, we had the best RPM ever on Adthrive/Raptive in February 2025.

- I also made roughly $350-$400 in digital product sales, most of it from smaller websites in my portfolio, but also from the authority website. Regardless of how funny it sounds, it is probably the most we've made since November 2023 from DP sales.

- Some change (up to $50 total) we made from Amazon affiliate, Amazon Merch, Ezoic etc.

- The overall $1,600-$1,700 is the best income from my website network since June last year. Not any crazy numbers, but we have to live in a present, and this is the reality at the moment. Maybe if things stick, we can aim for $2K in March?

- As for the expenses, except of hosting we spent roughly $35 on Google ads (I disabled some campaigns during the month).

- February was also highly productive for me, especially the second half, I'm probably 80% done now with all the work I hope to do on the new website in my main niche until next winter.

- When I am done with work on this new website, I have an idea about content to publish on my website from the other journey. Hopefully I manage to do so until end of March, since latest from mid April I will again stop working online for the next 6-7 months. Probably won't take a total digital detox like I did last year and will update you here at least occasionally, but there won't be any new work...

That's it for now, let me know how you did in February and whether you saw any magic recoveries :)

Hi, I just came across your topic, and I want to thank you for inspiring me. I also had a few small websites, but they failed after a year. I’d love to ask you a few questions if you don’t mind sharing:
-Do you use a VPS to manage all your websites?
-Which theme do you use for better SEO?
-Do you still use Ahrefs for keyword research?
-Nowadays, people are using AI to generate content quickly. Do you worry that AI-generated content might affect your websites?

Hey mate, here you go:

1. Yes, I use VPS from Interserver to manage most of my sites. Works pretty well and it isn't expensive.

2. The theme doesn't play a major role when it comes to SEO. As long as it is customizable enough and loads fast, you're good to go. I use both free theme like Astra or even Suffusion on some of my projects (discontinued by now), and premium themes. Haven't really noticed any difference in terms of SEO.

3. Nope, used it just at the beginning of the journey. After the first year or so I worked almost entirely with free tools, such as: my own data from GSC, checking sites of competitors and what topics they were covering, using extensions like keyword surfer for Chrome and checking the search volume there.

4. I do not know an answer to this one honestly. I kind of feel that Google cannot figure out much what's AI and what's not. So they set up some filters and criteria that disqualify many sites from search, including most AI sites, and most non-AI sites :D. At least that's true for sites that are monetized with ads/affiliate, and written primarily for informational purpose. So hard to say if producing content with help of AI is the issue.

Certainly if you produce it quickly and keyword focused and place ads on your site, you'll be penalized. But that will be the case even when you do not use AI (and simply produce content quickly with focus on search keywords and monetize with ads).

Not sure if this helps, but thanks for stopping by anyway :)

Looks a long journey guide mate. Best wishes
Thx

Thank you for your response, I don’t have experience with VPS yet. May I ask which VPS provider you are using?

Quick update:

It's been a while, and I have free 20 minutes, so thought I would update you a bit on my progress.

1. The new website in my niche: A few days ago I have completed all the work I planned to do on this new project this winter. As a perfectionist I am just 90% happy with it, but to eventually launch something is more important than to be 100% (what is never the case anyway).

The website is in many ways quite different to all my other websites in this niche, and I wonder how Google will react to it, and whether it will rank for the search topics I hope it to rank. Now the plan is to simply let it sit until next winter, and see what happens.

If nothing happens, I may even consider promoting it on various platforms, because I believe it has this chance to generate shares and repetitive traffic. But that's for next winter only, because the experiment was mostly about trying to get at least a bit of that huge organic traffic my main niche has...

2. My main authority website from this journey:
raptive_march_2025.png
- RPM pretty good for the first 10 days of the month. I believe we can get close to $1,500 in ad earnings for March, but let's see. Just for the record, I am not doing any work on this website whatsoever...

3. Digital product sales across my portfolio: Far cry from the happy days of the 2nd half of February... A few sales only in total on all my sites. Maybe it will pick up, maybe not, we have to wait and see really. I consider stopping another Google ads campaign that delivers a lot of clicks for good CPC but no sales, and even with great CPC it makes no sense running a campaign when sales simply aren't there... But I'll probably give it a chance until the end of March.

4. Website from my other journey here on BHW: This one is still going strong, and the recovery after one of the latest Google updates has not vanished. I am working a bit on this website now, in different ways:
  • Checking the few articles that actually generate affiliate commissions on Amazon and replacing products that aren't in stock anymore or their reviews dropped with better products that people can actually buy. It is surprising how many such products were in those articles. They have over 1K views combined in last 90 days (and hopefully will have twice as much in next 90 days), so definitely worth improving them inthi way.
  • I added a simple and fun way to actually make a small donation on this website. I know 100% this won't work on most websites from my portfolio, but this one is different. Funny enough, with all my years in IM I've probably never tried something similar on any website (or at least I do not remember it), so let's see what happens.
  • I made some design and structure changes as well.
I can see the niche is waking up a bit even by my Amazon Merch account:
merch_last_7_days.png
-
While I am 100% sure Amazon Merch or Etsy isn't going to work unless you send traffic (over saturated, automation killing it totally), when you send your visitors to products related to your niche and the designs are good, you can definitely make some change... I already got reviews on some products, so hopefully things will only pick up.

For the next 2 weeks my main focus will be on this website. I will add new content with great traffic potential. At the end of the day, it is the one website that recovered from HCU (at least partially), and in a niche that interests me and will interest me in next 10 years no doubt, so probably a good decision to focus on it now, when I still have a bit of time to work on something online...
GSC impressions, last 12 months (the fall, another fall, and the recovery):

hcu_reco.png

5. Miscellaneous from other experiments:

- The two sites that I restructured back in December are still totally dead on Google. One of them is totally dead on other platforms as well, the other one hasn't improved/lost traffic from other search engines.

- My experiment with 4 new pages on the only for-profit website that hasn't been hit by any HCU updates:
2_new_pages_project_XX.png
- 2 out of 4 pages keep growing in page views every week (see on the chart). 2 are not indexed :D. The problem is that the one that I had a monetization ready for and that I knew would easily have $100-200 RPM is among the two non-indexed... For the 2 ranking I have no monetization ready (this website doesn't have display ads on)... I probably won't do anything on this website now, but if any of those two pages hits at least 500-1K views/month until next winter, I will work on a specific monetization for the given page. Next winter.

- I also work a bit on a side gig (a business website for a "client", who is actually someone quite close to me). Again this experience shows me why I simply prefer to work on my own projects... You know how it goes: you write a client 5 precise but simple questions, and it takes them 7 days to reply to you, and they reply only to 2 of them... So then you're stuck or you do things your way, and then it is a lottery whether they like them or not and you have to re-work them again...

So that's it for now, eventually took me over 40 minutes to post it, so I hope at least some of you find something here helpful/inspirational for your own projects. Take care everyone, and I'll be back with another update :)

How long does Raptive accept drop in traffic before they kick one out? Judging by previous posts I presume you bought a small hotel or motel somewhere in mountains or by the sea. If your new site is about your local nature trails, parks or smth. similiar you could monetize with booking affiliate programme. Put your place in 1st spot and add options to book another hotel if yours is completely booked or just for variaty as not everybody will want to stay in the same hotel.

Of course it's possible that your new site is about smth. completely different. Anyways, it's nice to see your updates. In the last year I`m visiting BHW just for your updates as it seems the site has been run over by bots.

Kikerinka do you use one vps for all your websites or 1 vps per website?

- I have no idea to honest. At Raptive they know that things can change with every new update (or at least they hope so). I also know some people who've been hit super badly and now with below 10K monthly traffic they are still with Raptive.
So, perhaps they keep you as long as the advertisers are happy, even if you do not meet any traffic limits anymore. But I may as well be wrong, and in a month or so receive an email from them that they are kicking me out... Would be a bummer, but not the end of the world either.

- I do not know about which new website you are talking about. My newest site is in the same niche as my authority website. With the website from my other journey that isn't as new anymore (if you meant this one), I prefer not sharing any details about the niche. I can only say that I cannot monetize it with Booking.com program.

- Thank you for your nice words. The interactions in this journey aren't what they used to be anymore, but that's only natural, considering the overall drop of interest and profitability in the niche website field. I will keep updating, perhaps just this one journey to keep things simple, and let's see where we can still get with this business model :)

Kikerinka do you use one vps for all your websites or 1 vps per website?
I have almost all my sites on the same VPS. Unless you have big traffic, one VPS for 30-40/month is good enough for you :)

Update, March 2025.

Time flies. But I am still here, so let's have a look how my authority website and other projects have done in March. This update may be a little longer than my recent ones, also because the next months I won't be very active on the forum. Most likely I won't take digital detox as I did last year, but I'll be around just sporadically and the updates won't be regular. Anyway, here we go:

1. Raptive: Considering the first half of the month, I hoped to break $1.5K with ad earnings from the authority website in March, but the second half of the month things slowed down a lot. Anyway, I am not completely disappointed with how things go...

raptive_march.png

2. Digital product sales: These really sucked. Had one good week (considering the standards of today) when we made roughly $150 in a week, but in the remaining three weeks of March we made only $50 in total... So the DP sales were only $200 in total.

I have also stopped one more Google ad campaign. It has been the main money consumer during the last two months, and there were 0 conversions for this specific product. With the campaigns I kept running right now, the Google ad expenses will be only about $10/month. Well, there's my plan of trying to make Google ads work over the year :).

3. My project with new content on the only website that hasn't been hit by Google updates in last 2 years:

two_pages_project_3.png
- These are the two pages that are indexed, weekly page views, since December (when I published all 4 new pages) until now. As you can see, they grow nicely, and both are close to 100 weekly page views by now.

Obviously these aren't any huge numbers, but to me it kind of suggest that once Google didn't decide that they hated your niche website (just like they do hate 90% of all niche websites), things aren't that much different as they were before, when it comes to the way they treat new pages of content.

First few weeks you get nothing, then some impression appears, then clicks, and perhaps eventually even the hockey stick growth will arrive. Of course, this website is in my main niche, and I have the data for the content, from the times when my authority website was ranking well for the same content.
One of these two pages has a potential for roughly 1.2K-1.5K monthly pages, the other one for 2K plus monthly page views. Both are 95% US traffic, and the RPM on Raptive used to be over $50 for each of them.

This website isn't currently monetized with ads, and I do not have a digital product/other monetization method ready for the two pages in question. As I said in one of my earlier updates though, if any of these pages reaches 1K PV/month, I will take care of monetization next winter.

Good news is that the other 2 new posts are back in Google index. They get just a few clicks in between them now, but when I last checked by site: operator, they weren't even indexed. So maybe they will also grow during the summer. In any case, I will definitely keep this domain and evaluate things the next winter.

4. My experiment with restructuring two small sites completely (reducing a lot the number of articles, changing structure, merging some short posts to super long posts, etc):
project_x_gsc.png
- This experiment is a complete failure. At least I tried it on domains where I didn't have much to lose anyway... The GSC for the other site looks pretty similar, so I won't post it here. Anyway, you can read more about this experiment in my previous updates. I spent a few days doing it, and it isn't something I will try with other of my websites, or something I would recommend any of you doing with your websites :D.

5. The website from my other journey: This website shows some promising potential. It is nowhere close to any interesting numbers, but:
  • It bounced back from HCU in one of unconfirmed December Updates.
  • It survived the latest Core update unscathed.
  • The growing trend is obvious.
  • Still getting a lot of brand searches and repetitive visitors.
  • Getting traffic from a variety of sources.
  • 90% of content is NOT based on keywords (that's what Google seems to like these days).
  • On good days I can see the potential it has... we are just still too far from reaching it. Let me show you few pictures:

project_2_analytics.png
- GA for this domain, for the month of March (the data for 31st are incomplete). On one day, we actually got close to 300PV/day.

gsc+project_2.png
- GSC for the website. As you can see, it was close to 0 in December, then it rose from ashes in that Dec update. And now, when the niche starts to be trending, the impressions and clicks are growing... The latest G Update doesn't seem to have an impact on it.

amazon_good_week.png
- And this is how it looks like on a good day. $20 from Amazon Affiliate commission, on a single day. The truth is that those good days are very few by now... simply because the traffic isn't there, or for the right terms I am not ranking high enough and in a moment when people visit my article, they already made their purchase, or make one from other browser window they have open.

However, I feel this website is the one worth working on in the future. I also learned that you have these breaking points in IM , simply certain milestones that can change a lot for your income... For example reaching certain number of page views per month that allows you to get into some premium ad network, or into a certain affiliate program. Or getting those few spots higher in SERPs for those few important keywords that generate the $$...

I have not reached any of these points with this website yet, but maybe I am not that far from reaching one of them? Lately I have worked on a content with a lot of traffic potential, and, considering that Google seems to like this website, who knows how the traffic will grow during the season?

Also, what is good about this niche is that the kind of content I have is close to impossible to replace with AI (I have tried it myself), and in theory, I have on my mind at least other 300 content pieces ideas for the website, with various traffic & earnings potential. So let's see, but this website may be my main focus in the coming years when it comes to IM.

6. My new project in the niche of my authority website. I am 100% done with this website now. Not monitoring traffic until October/November. Then it will be an interesting surprise. Maybe a lot of page views, and maybe a complete flop.. I will inform you then.

So that's it for now guys. As I said, I won't be here regularly anymore during the next 6/7 months. But I may update you once in a while, and even if I do not, don't worry. As always, I will eventually come back to BHW ;).

Have you tried plugging in some Other affiliate products in your blog ? i have got the occasional click bank $20 to $25 commission sales from some of my pages on my blog . Im following your journey .Good luck :)

Hello guys, it's been a long while, I know. But as I promised, I always come back, to update you on this fading journey, and on my slowly fading online journey in general :).
Having a few days with a bit more of time, I checked all my online stats, and decided to update here as well, since this year I am not on a digital detox (though spending little time online in general). So here we go:

Raptive_2025.png
- Raptive earnings, in 2025 so far. This is from my authority website, the only website I have with the network and 99.9% the only one I'll ever have there. As you can see, the earnings hover around the $1K mark/month, though there is a slow decline, both due to seasonality (summer isn't good for this niche), and the ever-growing prevalence of people using ChatGpt and similar, instead of search engines.

I kind of feel it will go like this, especially because I have no special motivation to work on this website anymore. When I update next year around this time, I guess I'll be writing about $500/month, or maybe that Raptive crashed and my website isn't monetized with ads anymore.

As strange as it may seems, I even considered taking the ads off the website and seeing what it does to traffic. But then other my such experiments were not successful, the only my websites that somehow survived the updates are website that never had ads on them, and not the ones that once had the ads on, and I later disabled them as an experiment. But maybe in some time Raptive will be no more (at the end of the day it is also a part of this collapsing ecosystem of content-rich websites), and I prefer to enjoy these earnings at least as long as they last...

traffic_acq_authority_site.png
- Traffic of my authority website, also slowly dwindling with more and more people using AI models, especially for informational queries. Notice that Google is a mere 5% of traffic now, whereas in the best days it was 95% and all other combined were the remaining 5%. But these days are gone, at least for this website.

I still sell some digital products on the website (and on others I have in this niche), and while the conversion rates are not as good as they used to be, it is still more about traffic than anything else. I just do not have traffic, especially to those eBooks that used to convert well. Cannot buy that traffic since Google ads sucks and with information keywords it is hard to make it viable.

So the sales hover at around 7-10 sales/month ($150-$220/month). As I said, more than anything else it is a question of traffic. This website once upon a time easily had 15-20 times more page views as it has now monthly, and so the decrease in number of sales is more-less the function of the decrease of traffic (when I simplify a bit, of course :)).
What I try to say here is that eBook still do sell, even for $20-$30 for an eBook on a purely informational topic, the tricky part now is getting that audience on the website, organically...

traffic_acq_2nd_journey_site.png
- This is traffic for the website from my 2nd journey, and the website I want to focus on mainly, within the limited time I still plan to devote to any online ventures in the near future (think next five years). This website never had ads on and though it didn't escape some of the Google updates, it also came back in some next ones, and Google is its no. 1 traffic source at the moment.

The content that I publish here lately is pretty hard to replace with AI (who knows in a few years though?), and also the website is built in a way that it attracts repetitive visits, and the brand name is search term no. 1 long term ( plus there's a good chunk of direct traffic as well, as you can see on the chart).

Good news is that a couple of months ago I got accepted to one specific affiliate program I was previously rejected by two times (a chance personal connection helped here). And while I haven't had time yet to implement the program properly, and in summer it doesn't work too well (I cannot specify more to not reveal too much), from the numbers I can see by now, I believe the program has a potential of $100/month (once I implement it properly) even with the relatively little traffic I have right now on this website... Also Amazon affiliate there is not too bad lately:

amz_aff_2nd_journey_site.png

- $44 in 30 days may seem like not much, but we should not forget that I have just a handful of articles monetized with Amazon affiliate. For the other program I got accepted to, I can implement that one to roughly 100 articles presently on the website (and write many more to implement it into later).

Of course, we can only speculate what could have become of this site should I start it in another time (few years earlier), but I still kind of feel, that even in this "online climate", that it is a kind of website that can live and thrive to some extent. And that cannot be said about websites from my main niche (the one of my authority website). Maybe some exception proves the rule though:

website_3_traffic_acq.png

- This is the only website from my main niche that continues unaffected by Google updates. It never had ads on, and I kind of run it a bit of under the radar, away from other sites. Monetized by some digital products, and with few pages of content, Google seems to like this website, in a strange way it seems to like some strange small sites nowadays. More like a lottery than anything else to be honest.

This is the website I did an experiment with last winter, posting 4 new pages on. By now, 2 rank no.1, outranking even the heavy-weighs of the internet as we know it today (think Reddit and such), plus everybody else that used to rank high back in the day. The other 2 pages are not indexed at all. o and figure out.. Traffic charts for the 2 pages in question:
example_page_1.png

example_page_2.png
- These charts reminds me the good old days, when it worked like this with all new good posts :D, but funny enough on this small website it still does, for some posts.

So I want to put together some eBook to at least one of them, even though the traffic limits seem to be around 600-800 PV/month for each of these pages. In any case, it is 90% US traffic, and I know it can convert.

The problem is that I have very little motivation to write this book, but then winter is long, and I will have time then. Maybe I will even try to write it with AI first (you see, things change :)), and just when I see there is potential and people buy at least 3-5 copies/month (and likely ask for refund too, since it ill be AI book), I will write the eBook myself.

- Other than these 3 websites, there's not much interesting going on in my online business. I checked some stats for the new website I put together in my main niche as a last-chance experiment, but it is total ghost town so far, even though it is already almost half year old. None magical revivals with other my smaller sites either :).

So that's it from my side, online. Offline everything is well, I'm a married man now, and enjoying the life I live, earning my living offline, but still being my own boss and outside of any corporate hassle/stress.

Of course, once upon a while I reminiscence about the old days, like the summer of 2021 when I went traveling for like 40 days and when I came back I had $15K more on my back account, including all travel expenses, not touching my websites network or doing any other work... But nothing last forever, and I would not change my present life for that one (it is a useless speculation anyway :)).

And what you've been all to?
Anyone got the job
(hopefully not in McDonald's :D)? Anyone still building websites, and making solid money with it? Anyone seen some magical recovery?

Let me know, I will be around for a few days (ready to answer questions too--if BHW hasn't turned to a complete bot-farm), and then focusing fully on my offline life again, planning to come back to IM partially during winter one more time...

Take care all,
Kikerinka

Great update. Wishing you the best in your life!
Thanks for taking the time to write an update. Btw what is your offline job?

Hi Kikerinka,

Thanks for this informative update.

On my end, despite continuing to publish an article every five days, the site is neither growing nor declining...
The future does not look bright for websites in general, I'm afraid.

Hello! Do you use the exact long-tail keyword as your title or tweak it?

Also, which keyword tools do you use—and how do you get your posts indexed?

Great update. Wishing you the best in your life!
Thanks for taking the time to write an update. Btw what is your offline job?
Thank you mate :). I do not have a job! Run a small personal project offline that doesn't need too much staff or overheads. Surely not becoming millionaire another time :D, but I like my present life very much. Prefer to not share more details here, and hope you will understand it.

Hi Kikerinka,

Thanks for this informative update.

On my end, despite continuing to publish an article every five days, the site is neither growing nor declining...
The future does not look bright for websites in general, I'm afraid.
Nice to hear from you mate, they should call you Mr. Persistent for sure :). I wonder what @blogmen is doing these days, so maybe he comes around to say.

Mate these are all questions belonging to the past... Forget about exact long tail and such. Forget about keyword tools. These are all useless nowadays.
I do not use nothing for indexing either. Just post quality stuff in a niche you know and like to write about, and wait for an unlikely reward from Google.

What I try to say here is that the key now isn't what tools you use, or what keywords you write for. The key is to create content that cannot easily be replicated by AI (now or in a couple of years time), to create a website that attracts repetitive visits (in one way or another), and most likely also to dive into other forms of getting traffic (social media, paid ads, etc).
