Now, there are big authority sites covering range of keywords in every broad niche. They have eaten all small websites.
Observe these social accounts from people who getting viral.....look how they write content...Yes, niche blogs still works- many bloggers are getting traffic from social media, Pinterest and even newsletters, not just google and still making money.

However, in my daily Googling I'm still running across many niche blogs ranking well for long tail keywords.
I agree that this is a very small sample size when you compare my personal Googling to the many billions of searches per day they receive.
