WTH Happened?!

Hi,

Something happened to me to one of my websites i don't update which has been around for about 7 months.

It suddenly (for 2 days) ranked for the keywords it supposed to (number 2) beating BIG sites. I got like 700 clicks from one keyword but then 2 days later.. dust.. gone from the rankings.

I didn't touch the site before it randomly ranked and i didn't touch it before it got thrown out of ranking.

Can anyone explain WTF happened?

Yes.. and it oddly ranks for the keywords just far far far far back :/

Edit: *the competition .. well.. the top page is FULL of large websites such as sidereel, hulu, etc. Theres no "personal" website on the first page

I have a site that does the exact same thing... I get good yahoo and bing traffic and every now and then I get a google burst and a boat load of traffic.

I have no idea what causes it, I just appreciate the burst and the revenue associated with is.

I have a site that ranks first for one of my keywords for a couple weeks that gives me 2500-3500 visits a day. It then drops of the face of the earth for a month or two and then repeats all over again.

I gotta agree on this one. For white hat folks, this is the silver lining but it just takes a lot of time and patience - two things that clients usually don't have an appreciation for.

Got same situation several times... I have some theories and I am still testing them so will not comment on it right now... Check your backlinks in that phase you might see some difference...

My guess - is that it's part of googles algorithm to find the best site.

Think about it, how can a computer tell a good site from a spam site? It can't, and if it could it could always be manipulated.

If you want to know the best site overall for a specific keyword - look at the Bounce Rate and Avg Time on site.

All my sites consistently bounce around the SERPs - the ones that stay #1 all have one thing in common - < 30% bounce rate, and average time of 3-4 minutes per visitor. This was the big G testing your site, and seeing how well it would perform if it was #2 for that keyword.

That is completely normal, and I guarantee your website will come back. It might not be today, tommarow or next month. Eventually it will be back and higher then ever.

Thanks for the feeback! I don't know where my site is in the SERPS atm. i think it's like page 100 or something lol. It's just odd how it comes back for 2 days every like 4 weeks.

Although what turokman says kinda makes me see it differently. I have a different website that has 20% bounce rate with visitors average time of 4mins.. and its Rank 1-3 (matches what he says)
