bob76,
You have not used the Google Keyword Tool correctly. You have to go by EXACT match. What the gurus or other people have been telling you about "Broad" match is completely incorrect.
I currently am outranking MTV, BET, and VH1 for competitive hip hop terms. 2 of my keywords combined in the EXACT match get OVER 160,000 searches per month. I'm number 4 for one of them, and 6th for the other, and I only get LESS than 2,000 searches per month from those 2 keywords. 95% of my traffic (3,000 PER DAY) is coming from 2,000+ other keywords that I have used via tags, post headers, etc.
EXACT simply means that they put the keyword WITHOUT any other variation. So if your going for Cars then the visitor would put in Cars, and not any variation of it like mechanical cars, car sweatshops, cheap cars to buy, etc. (Exact doesn't mean quotes)
The broad match is any combo for the word, and NOT what you have optimized for. So example: Your targeting Cars and broad match shows tens of millions, and Exact match shows 1 million. This is how it works:
When someone types "Cars money making up some mechanical tourist's butt" that still gets counted as a search for the term Cars in BROAD match, so you won't show up in the search engines for that keyword. But if someone typed Cars (with no quotes), and you are optimized, then YOU show up. It doesn't mean that the visitor HAS to put the term in quotes. This is a myth.
Take it from a person who's ranking very good in the search engines for VERY competitive keyterms. I had to build 130,000+ backlinks over the past 14 months to get to my current rankings now!
