Google provides several options for submitting a Sitemap.

Are there any known benefits to using one over the other?

I use XML Sitemaps plugin in wordpress to make my 2x sitemap links (the tar.gz compressed one which google seems to love, and a regular .xml sitemap)

In addition i include my blog rss feed, and if I have news inclusion approval, i add the news sitemap

If i have video, i provide the video sitemap as well

@mastershake - excuse this noob question but what is a video sitemap and how do I find mine?

I use SharePoint Designer 2007 - Does it support sitemap creation?

It is interesting that you imply that Google has a preference (tar.gz over .xml). Is this your opinion, or a published fact?

FWIW: I just used an online tool at AuditMyPC DOT com

A one minute instructional video helped me create my site map in under a minute.

Kudos to the guy that made it available!

you could get the specs for building your sitemap on sitemap with the org tld; i use a wordpress plugin to automatically generate mine; you could submit it through webmaster tools

I am about to start some blogging to promote my site using the Link Push approach. I'm guessing WP is the way to go (based on everything I've read here).

Assuming I will have to download it from somewhere, what is the WP plug-in you use?

P.S. I apologize if that question doesn't make sense - I have only read about WP thus far, never seen or used it.

If I check my site using site:mysitedomain in Google, I do not see all of my pages indexed. It is missing my Privacy Policy (who cares) and one of my specific pages.

If I check in Yahoo!'s site explorer, I only see 2 pages.

I have 8 pages on the site, 4 of which I want indexed.

Using Google's Webmaster Tools, I looked at the sitemap.xml and verified that all of my pages are accurately included. Google says 9 pages were are submitted and 6 are indexed.

How do I get Yahoo and Google to re-crawl my site and update the links?

The online tool I mentioned above is Auditmypc.com's sitemap generator

Not only was it easy to use, they have a very informative page about submitting sitemaps, re-submitting sitemaps, the different formats, etc.

As a newbie myself, I expect other newbies will find it helpful and educating.

Enjoy!
