there is "script" to force AFS/CSE appearing wherever you want by using ad inserter, but i don't recommend to use it since it's too risky.
Can you please provide more details if possible for you?

Functionality is still there with sponsored ads. I know it as I have a CSE account with that feature, but I’m thinking of selling it since I no longer use the custom search engine.

Genuine advertising on Google adsense. You will keep earning from the program in long term that way.
