Hi all,

In my ecommerce from Spain, we are getting a lot of free traffic from LATAM, because we speak spanish. We have a .com domain, and we would like to adapt the website to every country in Latam for selling there, but i have few questions. I have implemented hreflag for all these countries.

1. Should i create subdomains or subfolders? ex .com/mx/, or should i stay with .com?

2. If i create subdomains or subfolders, would that affect the main domain? can i rank a subdomain or subfolder separately without affecting SEO negatively each other?

I am using Shopify, any advice is very welcome.

Thanks lads, very appreciated.

Use subfolders (e.g., .com/mx/) with Shopify Markets—they’re better for SEO, share domain authority, and are easier to manage. Subfolders rank independently without hurting the main domain, while subdomains require more effort and split SEO power.

Stick to subfolder com/mx, .com/ar they work well with hreflang and help maintain domain authority.

Subfolders (e.g. /mx/) are generally better for SEO as they consolidate domain authority. Subdomains can rank too, but they’re treated more like separate sites.

Thanks mate, but the thing is, both pages will be in spanish, that is not duplicated content?

Using subfolders (.com/mx/) is generally better for SEO and consolidates authority, while subdomains are treated more independently; on Shopify, subfolders are preferable for localized versions, and creating separate sections helps target specific markets without harming overall domain SEO.

Great that you're getting LATAM traffic! Since you're on Shopify, using subfolders like .com/mx/ is generally better for SEO and easier to manage than subdomains. They help consolidate domain authority and allow hreflang to work more effectively. Yes, you can rank each folder separately without harming the main domain in fact, it can boost your overall SEO if implemented correctly.

Use subfolders (e.g., .com/mx/) for better SEO consolidation and separate country targeting without harming the main domain’s authority, especially on Shopify.

Getting LATAM traffic on .com should I use subfolders or subdomains for country targeting without hurting main SEO?

As said earlier, you should parameter hreflang correctly to avoid duplicate content. I have the same situation with a .com domain
