I have a onsite seo question

I have a new site and its on wordpress i would like to know should I have my posts as domain.com/post-name or domain.com/post-name/111
Will the 111 part hurt my rankings? It is because I may have two posts with same name later. Will making new backlinks aggressively be ok or should I try 10-15/day.
One last question, is there any good onsite seo book, all i could find was off site, Thanks.

Tracking codes in urls can be tough... you have to 301 redirect to the actual URL and use canonical tags too... you don't want google to give the page rank to the backlink url when the canonical url is the one you are trying to influence. By far the safest thing to do is to use the canonical url for backlinking and build your origin reporting around referring URLs... its a much safer way to go...

but if

domain.com/post-name/111 301redirects to domain.com/post-name which canonicals http://www.domain.com/post-name then you should be ok.

On WP I like to have /%category%/%postname%/ set under settings....permalinks...common settings and enter the above in the custom structure box.

That way you can use your category tags for a little extra SEO.

ipopbb could u explain more, how to get this canonical url?
I mean like i may have two post with same title at some moment of time and then the post url will be diff so is it better to have a number after it, like dog training i may have a post today and maybe again after 15 or so days.
so my url will be domain.com/dog-traning/122 and after 15 days a new post domain.com/dog-training/150 will this hurt my rankings,should I do this or not?
and can the content to both url be a little same and not totally same but not totally unique either, Thanks for ur help guys.

In my view wordpress will not assign same url to two different post so even if you got same title it will assign some number to 2nd page on it's own and that will alert you, you can change title and url then...

For link building yaa 10-15 in start is ok, increase it slowly with time... Most important is consistency... Don't forget to update your site on frequent interval...

If you want to list your site in Google News, you could still do as decker and Runn3r suggests with just one addition. As sidnettwo says, one of the requirements is to have at least three digit identifier at the end of every url.

You can do this by using /%postname%-%post_id% or /%category%/%postname%-%post_id% structure, which will append post ID to the end of URL.

This would make the OP example become something like this "domain.com/dog-training-122" or "domain.com/category/dog-training-122". Or do it with the html like /%postname%-%post_id%.html so you get "domain.com/dog-training-122.html" or "domain.com/category/dog-training-122.html".

I think one of those would be a better solution than making the post id become another subfolder. It will also solve the OP's concern about using the same post name multiple times.

edit - As far as doing 10-15 backlinks per day... That's very conservative, if you do that then you certainly won't run into any problems. I think you could significantly increase that without any problems. Even adding 100-150 per day would still be considered pretty conservative by most people's standards on here. Most people are pumping out thousands even on new domains sometimes.

If you published article about "IPAD" and you want it to be inherited from 2 categories (category "News" and category "Gadgets")

Case1: using /%postname%/ as permalink
This work without any problems to your site. google bots findout this article unique in your site.

Case2: using /%category%/%postname%/ as permalink
Google bots found 2 permalinks with the same contents here
/news/ipad/ and /gadgets/ipad/ which will cause duplicating contents.
you can see it through your google webmaster tools.

Should i get the numbers at the end to make unique or not, i am not trying for google news, it is a normal site, but it may have the same title in many posts at some time. What advantage is it if i get category/url? Or should I just stick with the current only /url and nothing else?

Well between all the information presented by various people in this thread, you've been given enough information to make a really informed decision.

If you're still unsure then I'll let you know this. The most often way suggested in the guru type ebooks is to only use the "/%postname%/" without the category. It gets you the keywords and avoids duplicates

Personally myself, I like the "/%postname%-%post_id%.html" but as I said, the most common suggestion is "/%postname%/".

I use the Virtual SILO plug-in to control structure and set permalink to /%category%/%postname%/ with the category being keyword specific / and the post name being keyword specific too.

I generally follow the rule of thumb of "optimizing 1 keyword per post" --

Well the OP is already using wordpress. The point of this thread is to discuss how best to customize it. Specifically regarding the permalinks.


@OP - I gave a little more thought to this and looked at what I've done on several of my own blogs.

I think that if you want the extra advantage of having one more keyword in your url, then using the /%category%/%postname% would be a very good idea as long as you used keywords as your categories. Be sure to do as KMCORP suggests and only select one category when you make your posts to minimize the duplicate content issue.

Since your already concerned about using the same name multiple times for your posts then I think you should add the %post_id% to the filename as well that way the number will make the difference for the post names. WP would make the name slightly different anyway, but by using the postid it does give you a possible option if you ever want to submit to Google News.

So if I were setting this up for myself based on the info you've presented, I think I might actually go with /%category%/%postname%-%post_id%.html

I don't know if this is the "absolute" most optimal, but it does take care of all that your asking about. I think it would give sufficient keyword benefit for seo purposes by doing it that way.

That's the reason I do it that way too. But if she really wants to get the extra keyword in the url then the category can do it. For my personal sites I like just domain.com/postname.html, but there are advantages and disadvantages for each way that it can be done. In the end it's just a decision the OP needs to make. No one else can really tell her absoilutely what will be best for her situation.
