Why Are Backlinks Important in SEO?

I keep hearing that backlinks are crucial for SEO, but I want to understand exactly why they matter and how much impact they have in 2025.
When a site mentions you with a link, it works like a contextual recommendation. Google sees this as a sign of trust and authority. The more high-quality, relevant mentions you get, the more visibility you can gain — it’s one of the strongest signals for ranking.

Backlinks—links from other websites pointing to your client’s site—are a cornerstone of SEO in 2025, playing a critical role in driving traffic, boosting rankings, and building authority, as we’ve touched on in our discussions about safe backlinking, content updates, internal linking, and Google’s Helpful Content Update (HCU). They act as endorsements, signaling to Google that your site is trustworthy and relevant, which aligns with our White Hat SEO strategies for your client’s traffic goals

Backlinks are important in SEO because they signal trust and authority to search engines, boosting your site’s ranking.

Backlinks boost your site’s trust and help it rank higher on Google. In 2025, quality and relevance matter more than quantity.

If you want your sites to stand out on Google, building quality backlinks is key. Backlinks from other trusted sites show Google that your content is valuable and trustworthy. The algo naturally favors well-structured websites with strong backlink profiles over those without. That’s why consistently building backlinks should be part of your long-term SEO strategy. The more high-quality links you obtain, the higher your chances of ranking better and attracting more visitors to your sites.

Backlinks are a critical component of SEO because they serve as a signal of a website’s authority, relevance, and trustworthiness to search engines like Google.

Very nice Brooke. You really add value to this forum.

Backlinks are essential in 2025 because they convey authority, relevance, and trust to Google, proving the value of a website and helping your website rank higher. For new sites, each high-quality link can improve rankings by 30-50%, and for mature sites, each high-quality link can improve rankings by 20-30%. For your local SEO agency, 3-10 local backlinks can get you on the map pack in 3-6 months, while 5-15 niche links can boost a blog's rankings.

Backlinks are still super important because they show Google that other sites trust your content. It’s like getting a vote of confidence. In 2025, it's not just about having a ton of links, but making sure they’re from high-quality, relevant sites. So yeah, they still have a big impact, but combining them with good on-page SEO is key for the best results!

Backlinks still matter in 2025 as strong signals of trust and authority, helping boost rankings when combined with quality content.

backlinks can seem like SEO magic sometimes But yeah, even in 2025, they’re still important. It’s more about who links to you rather than how many. Think of it like a vote of confidence from trusted sites. Just make sure your content's strong too it all works together.

Backlinks are like your trusted and loyal customers. Its like getting a stamp of approval from them and they direct traffic from their website to yours. Think of it like tricking the search engine that your content has substance and is worth visiting.

Backlinks act like votes of trust from other websites, helping search engines see your site as credible. They’re still a key factor for higher Google rankings in 2025.

Because people need something to point to to try and act as if this isn't a dead industry so they can keep you in it spending your money

SEO as far as ranking a niche site on Google is concerned is dead, but so many people have built their livelihoods on selling the dream and some are shady and act as if all you have to do is spend money on links and problem solved

But in reality, how many links do you think you need to buy to catch up to the behemoth sites that take up 90% of Googles page 1 like Yelp, TripAdvisor, Reddit, Quora, ESPN, and whatever legacy brands Google still chooses to rank?

They have millions if not billions of backlinks, are you willing to spend $10k to get .1% of the backlinks they have? If you don't think that is going to make a difference then are you going to spend 100k or 1 million?

And how are you going to feel after a great day where you spent a lot of time and money acquiring 6 killer links only to find out those behemoths did nothing and gained 60 just based on ranking in the SERPS alone?

At this point Google is so clearly broken and only a fool would continue to pour good money down the drain chasing something that is most likely never coming back

The sooner you admit that to yourself and pivot to something with a future the better your long term life is likely to be

Dont you think all these mentioned businesses solve a visitors need? Thats what made them special in the first place. When it was easy to rank on 1st page, all sites would be on 1st page. The businesses mentioned get links for free, because people recomment their service. They get visitors from these links. Not high places in SERP. And do you really think companies like Reddit are buying scammy backlinks here on BHW?

backlinks are just important if you have a high niche keyword. otherwise its not as important.

Do you really truly think that Yelp and TripAdvisor solve peoples needs for every best x in city keyword better than all the niche sites, local bloggers, local newspapers, local tv stations, and travel bloggers?

Clearly they don't, yet they rank for everything in best x in city.... because Google doesn't care about the serps anymore and its easier to just do this (plus no old websites can sue them for scraping their info and using it in their AI because now their info has no value)

You literally will find 15 year old TripAdvisor forum posts that had very little info at the time and literally no relevant info today ranking at the top of page 1..... because Google doesn't care

I don't even understand your question about Reddit buying scammy backlinks, obviously they arent buying any backlinks.... my point is these massive brands that Google has propped up to rank at the top of all queries earn more free backlinks every day just based on getting so much traffic from Google that no matter how much effort and money you put into linkbuilding they are likely to gain more backlinks than you on any given day, week, month, or year

Not to mention they are already starting at a place of having 10000000000x more backlinks than you, and more importantly than any of that Google likes them and ranks them unlike 99.9% of all small to medium sized publishers

Sitting here acting like links are as important today as they were 5 years ago is not paying attention to the current reality and just coming here to parrot out 'create quality content' and 'get quality links' which isn't helping anyone
