Why can’t I start a direct message?

2.0 Update! ​

If you want to start a direct message, you need to have at least 15 posts, otherwise you will not see the option to start a new direct message. Make sure your posts are good quality and do not make short, spammy or low-quality posts just to boost your post count - these posts will be deleted and your account may be banned.

When you reach 15 posts, you will see a yellow button appear at the top of your inbox with "Start Direct Message" - this allows you to send a message to another member.

You will also see the option to 'Start direct message' in the pop up window when you click on another user's name.

Do not start direct messages promoting your site or services or asking for things - this is against the rules and may lead to your account being banned.

General participation will get you to the required posts to send a DM.

A reply does count as a post in most subforums.

They do not count in the lounge though.

Yes, post and message refer to the same thing.

Just a note, posts made only in the Lounge section don't count toward your total post count.

What if someone leaves a comment under my sales thread asking me to PM them with more service information, will this be recognized as promoting my site or services through direct messages? Would I get a warning for that?

Sellers cannot promote via direct message unless it is a direct response to a thread in Hire a Freelancer, Want to Buy or a post in their own marketplace thread, so the scenario you've suggested, responding via DM to a customer query in your own sales thread, is permitted and you would not receive a warning.

i was looking all over trying to figure out how to send dm, mostly to ask the type of service they are reffering
