Best way to learn how to be a Moderator is to follow Mods that you respect.

I did that when I was a Moderator in training and still do it to this day and it's been 3 or 4 years since I became one here.

I even made a post in the staff forum about that back when we had some moderators in training and I'll stand by that as that is a normal business practice. Learn from those in place and emulate them and their actions.

Forget a book, website, tea leaves, learn from those that have done it or are doing it.

I think it depends. Some jobs are hard and pay little, so people don’t want them. Some secret groups have rituals where you take an oath to join. I think you need to look at the details to know which one it is.
