Do you tell your folks what you're doing?

Been in the online business for 10 years, doing online biz for 6 years, and never felt better. I tried the 9-5 life, I couldn’t do it. Literally! I’m not saying this is what I’ll be doing forever, but I don’t put myself down for it. Quite the opposite.

I don’t tell people what I do or how much I make not even family. It’s not their life, not their business. Once people know, they start talking and messing with your head, so I avoid sharing anything. I protect my mindset.

People around me (family) have biases and live based on social pressure, religion, politics, and whatever else. Anything outside their norms is judged. I’m the only one who chose differently, so I’ve been tagged as "awkward/different" which, to me, is a clear sign I’m doing something right. Lowkey, they’re curious, but they’re too afraid to take the leap and risk failing (or not) and losing the "keeping up with the Joneses" lifestyle: latest iPhone, sneakers, brand clothes, etc.

I truly believe people respect you based on how much you make, and once you reveal it, you’re either looked down on or falsely praised, never treated equally. By not telling, you get to see how they act and know how to handle them.

Pre covid it was very tough to convince people that what I do is legit but post covid many understand because of the WFH culture which emerged.

Other than that, my parents don't poke much into what I do and I don't share much with them either these days.

The reality is that you have to strike a balance. You can share some details of your work with loved ones who understand you. This can help you in difficult moments, because they will be easier to understand your experiences, and sometimes they can give really good advice from the outside. But at the same time it is undesirable to mix work and life completely removing the boundaries.

For me it is different because my dad was actually the one that got me into the IM world, I was working 9-5s when we first moved to Greece and my dad started an SEO agency. When I quit my job he told me to work with him and that is how I started, I have now surpassed his level of expertise and we discuss new ideas daily, my household is 80% talk about IM haha. Edit: As for friends I only talk to close friends about it, like 3-4 of my best mates. If others ask me what I do I just say "I make websites" because 1 they dont understand and 2 people always end up asking you to teach them to make money online and then to help them out etc etc

About telling others what I'm doing...I’ll keep it vague like ‘tech stuff’ or ‘online things’. Exact income numbers? Hell no, that’s like handing strangers a remote control to your ego. Let them think I’m broke or ballin’, either way their reactions stay pure chaos-free.

I am agree with you ,its better to keep it to yourself and not tell how much even to your family
Also many people are envious if they see you you have succes and their negative energy will afect you so its better to hide your succes

Nice, keep it in the family, I love it. It depends a lot hiw you grow based on how the family are being supportive ir indiferent.

Thanks for the kind words. The secret for me is to have 1 main biz and 2-3 side hustles to keep me 'entertained'.

Tbe ego thing is real, if you are at that level that no words can touch you, good for you, but I'm not immune to fam words, for strangers idgaf, let them think I'm broke af.
