Paypal denied payments

Hey guys,

maybe someone experienced that before and has a solution for me. First off....fuck paypals support, they are completly useless.
So I have a paypal advanced checkout (credit card payments, without the need to have a paypal account) integrated into my gravity forms. Payments from customers get all denied by paypal. Back and forth with the customer support and technical support and they just keep saying its part of their suspicious payments system that denies payments which might be not legit. So I researched on my own for days on end, found out one thing that could trigger that is that I didnt collect information like the adress from the customer which then gets send to paypal via the api, so i changed that. Now I did some testing with live payments with my own cards (cards are not connected to paypal in any way) and it was finally working. Well now it was working with € as currency (product on my website is declared in euro) but I want it to be dollars. Changed it to dollars and voila not working again, everything gets denied by paypal. Support said it has nothing to do with the currency. Self test again....currency set to dollar, payment denied, changed the currency back to euro and it works (in a matter of 5min between these two test payments with the same card). Currency in my business paypal account is set to dollar (primary) and euro (secondary). Dont know what to do anymore and i am about to look for a different payment processor which works for my niche. Or is it normal that paypal denies quite a lot of payments?

Can't you change it on your website and make it appear in USD?

That sounds super frustrating. If PayPal keeps blocking payments over currency changes, it might be worth testing a different processor. Stripe or Wise could be good alternatives.

Stripe does not allow my niche, I will check wise. PayPal was just easy to setup and integrate with my gravity form.

I guess I do, paypals api is garbage. Many people have problems with that.

I feel your pain, PayPal’s "suspicious payment system" is straight-up dumb sometimes. If it works fine in euros but gets blocked in dollars, I'd bet it is a currency issue, no matter what their useless support says.

Couple of things you could try:

1. Check your PayPal settings – Make sure USD is fully enabled for payments, sometimes they have weird settings that mess things up.
2. Try different cards – Some banks freak out when a card that usually does EUR transactions suddenly tries USD.
3. Test small amounts – If you’re trying with bigger payments, PayPal might be flagging them harder in a "foreign" currency.
4. Check logs & API requests – Maybe Gravity Forms is sending something slightly different when switching to USD, even a tiny difference could trigger PayPal’s nonsense.
5. Turn off any weird fraud filters in PayPal – Sometimes they’re way too aggressive.

If none of this works, honestly, just dump PayPal and go for Stripe or another processor that actually works without treating every payment like a crime scene.

Thanks for the tips! I'm pretty sure too it has something to do with the api requests, like you said...just a small mistake in the api call and they will deny it. Usd is my primary currency in the paypal account and euro is secondary, at least what I can see in the settings. I doubt that its the cards, I can even pay something in rubels by card and my bank would not block that (3d secure, so i have to confirm most payments anyway). Paypal just seemed like a good option since its "easy" to integrate with gravity forms. Will probably settle with a branded checkout of a different payment processor and a redirection, could be worse. Thanks mate!

Yeah its not really a payment gateway but apparently they have something called "multi currency business wise accounts" where customers can pay you. Just read a little about it.

I heard about that, was just convenient for the start. Wanted to look for a new one along the way anyway but I guess its better to go with another one straight away.
