Can AI Make You Immortal?

in a sense, yes, i do believe we will be able to immortalize ourselves. i don't believe we will be able to "live" after we die as AI avatars in the sense that we're still alive, conscious, and so on. that gets into some tricky questions about what it means to be alive, what consciousness is, and so on. i believe it will go the route of immortalizing people other than yourself, such as deceased love ones. that is already happening, as you can see here.

now what i am very keen on is combining Neuralink-esque technology with AI. i imagine a future where we have a brain implant that taps into all of our senses (and can modify then; eg: vision overlays, translating language in real time so you "hear" it in your own language, etc) and memory/thought, while having the vast capabilities of AI to boot. in short: cyborgs. i for one would take that leap.. and pray i don't get hacked and my vision filled with Goatse

imagine a future where we have a brain implant that taps into all of our senses
I just imagined, and it's horrifying

Now imagine a future in which humans are naturally and evolutionary capable of doing everything the AI will ever be able to do, and more.

Did you imagine it? Good! Now keep this into your memory at all times and stop hallucinating! God have given us all that we need (and more) to live happy, strong, healthy, wealthy and free at all times, we just need to stop relying on technology and instead focus on improving ourselves :)

the consciousness and the spirit are probably already immortal, so if we're talking about these 2 specifically then yes, humans are immortal.

But the physical body is not, and cannot be immortal (at least that's what I think, feel free to prove me wrong), which is why I think humans can't live forever in the same body.

Regardless, I would not let the AI handle my consciousness. AI is good for many things, just not for handling the sensitive layers of a human being. If we're to upload / transfer our consciousness into other bodies / mediums I am 100% sure that human handling (or at least supervision) is necessary
I feel like you can be immortal with right technology and lifestyle. Maybe not now but in one point it will be possible. The real question is, are you really living then?
I agree with you that consciousness is immortal so why try so hard in this body. Give me another body with more experiences, maybe another planet?

This is what I'm thinking about for a while now: do you think AI could actually help humans live forever one day?

Picture this: our minds, memories, and everything that makes us us getting uploaded into a machine, living on long after our bodies are gone. Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie but with AI, brain-computer tech, and all the insane stuff happening in science right now, who knows? Maybe immortality is closer than we think.

So, what do you think? Could AI actually make humans immortal, or is it just wishful thinking? I'm curious to hear your take on this!
It's hard to predict. This is quite absurd but I think nothing is impossible for humans.

Can you really call it 'immortality' if it’s just a copy of your mind and not you experiencing it?

Immortality implies continuity of self, not just replication.

Science already tells us that nothing lasts forever! Everything breaks down eventually.
What if we're already a copy of a mind of another person in the past or somewhere else? If the mind's copy is possible, there's a chance that we're already a copy too. Have you ever thought about it? )

This is what i am waiting for.I want to get rid of this old withered body and upload myself into the cloud.
I am just hanging on till it happens.
Figure it can't be to long now.

only if we don't wise up and / or become highly moral and responsible with life in general, and with sentient life in particular. Advanced civilizations have technology that's way beyond our ability of understanding it, so if technology meant downfall these advanced civilizations would not exist anymore.

But they still exist which means that they are also highly moral and highly responsible which allows them to dominate their tech instead of the tech dominating them
I don't know if I would look at it that way. I think you can still be moral and still have a life/timeline in which AI overlords do become the dominant force. Then everything is at their mercy I'd imagine. If they wanted to take over and make a new society, what could stop them? I guess we can only focus on bei g responsible as you pointed out. Moral to me is just evaluating what is right and wrong and development/transhumanism isn't necessarily wrong.

we can't fight the Universe, much less "have to". The Universe is infinite in all directions, and never created by anyone (it simply exists and had existed for all eternity and will keep existing for all eternity), and an entity that's infinite in time and space can not be fought, much less defeated.

I don't know why you think that we have to fight the Universe, probably you meant that we have to conquer the unknown, in which case I agree. Evolution is always about breaking records and conquering the unknown, we got where we are today because at some point in time, one cave human had stopped bludgeoning his partner to steal his food and had started asking himself questions or trying new things to make / get his own food. Closed systems never evolve, so we constantly have to break the systems and go out of our comfort zones if we are to evolve...

But anyway, I feel like I'm steering away from the main point (fighting the Universe), so again, we don't have to fight the Universe at all, I really don't agree with this take. We just have to.... well... keep living our lives, keep exploring, keep asking questions and trying stuff out, and keep creating. When we do all these we don't have to fight anyone or anything because we are all busy bettering ourselves :)
We have to fight the universe in the sense that nothing is certain or consistent enough to last forever. Even the universe had a beginning (at least according to scientists, they also say time didn't exist before the universe, but this is getting into territory I have no understanding of lmao). Due to that ever-changing nature. You need to adapt and fight against the changes if your sole focus is survival.

Like for example, there will be a time when the world will perish and probably even this galaxy. If you want to live you gotta find something new to adapt to. It's an inconvenience that needs a solution brought to the table. I guess you can also call this conquering the unknown too, but I've envisioned it as an everlasting problem that just needs a solution each and every time or you will just be stuck in the same place until it's too late.

We have to fight the universe in the sense that nothing is certain or consistent enough to last forever
to me this means fighting our (constantly evolving) nature, not fighting the Universe. The Universe is nothing but empty space (well, filled with planets, Suns, and other particles, of course, but still empty mostly given its infinite vastness). Besides, humans live on planets, inside of atmosphere that protects them from the Universe, so once again, we don't have to fight the Universe in any way :)

Even the universe had a beginning
no, it didn't!

If the Universe had a beginning it means that - before the Universe was born - something else must have existed where the Universe was born. And if something had existed, in my opinion it could have only been another Universe since the Universe doesn't exist within any container. This is why I don't believe bogus theories like Big Bang, multiple / parallel Universes, etc.

For me, the Universe is infinite in all directions, not created by anyone, never dying, never expanding, never contracting, never splitting into anything, never anything. It just exists in the current form that it had existed in for all eternity, and it will continue to exist in this form for all eternity

(at least according to scientists
some scientists are stupid, some misinformed, some are wrong, some are intentionally evil and misleading. Scientists are still humans, and - like all humans - they're prone to making mistakes and to not knowing everything, so don't blindly believe the scientists just because it's comfortable

I've given an example last year on another thread (I don't remember on which one) on how many top scientists (physicians, mathematicians, etc) of that era (200-300 years ago) were shouting loud and clear that no objects that's heavier than the air can fly. This was with regards to the topic of that time that airplanes could become reality. All (or most) top scientists of that time were convinced that airplanes could not exist because they're heavier than the air and - lo and behold - years later the first airplane got created and - what would you know! - it actually flew :)

I think even Einstein have been wrong in some of his theories back in his day (although, later on he had admitted his misconceptions), so if Einstein can be wrong, why couldn't our modern scientists be wrong too? You just have to use your brains when assessing things, and science should be used to confirm / infirm your theories and gut instinct, but it shouldn't be trusted blindly

they also say time didn't exist before the universe,
there's no relation between time and the Universe. Time is a abstract, non-tangible unit of measure that people use to organize their lives and events because the brain loves structure and organization, and by giving it points of reference (time) it can classify and handle events easier and without creating confusion and mental issues inside of our psyches...

Besides, time is different from one planet to another, and it's strictly dependent on that planet's movement around its axis. Have you not watched the movie Interstellar? As much as you shouldn't take movies for absolute truths, the part where Matt Damon ages I don't know how many Earth years by spending 6-7 minutes on different planet is true.

Time, human biorhythm, a planet rotation and the human psyche are all interconnected with each other in some ways that we don't yet understand / can explain, but the fact that time is just a convention and that there is no such thing as universal time remains.

but this is getting into territory I have no understanding of lmao)
all good, I'm not good at these things either :p

Due to that ever-changing nature. You need to adapt and fight against the changes if your sole focus is survival.
agreed! But as you said, "due to that ever-changing nature", so it's the nature (human condition if you wish, I think in this regards they're synonyms) that we're fighting against, not the Universe.

Like for example, there will be a time when the world will perish and probably even this galaxy. If you want to live you gotta find something new to adapt to.
100%

It's an inconvenience that needs a solution brought to the table.
it's an inconvenience only if you worry about it at the moment. By the time we (the people of Earth) need to relocate to other planets / galaxies, the natural evolution will have brought us to the level that's needed to for us to terraform / inhabit other planets. But this evolution needs to happen organically and slowly, not to be forced upon us to cause us distress, mental illnesses, etc..

In the last 2000 years humans have gotten from bows and spears to iphones, and UFOs (yes, there are actual UFOs that are actually built by humans). And if this is what's happened to us in 2000 years, can you not see how easy it will be for us to conquer / terraform / inhabit other planets from far away (in other galaxies) in 4 billion of years that our Sun is said to keep burning for?

But once again, we need to be left alone to evolve at our own paces and according to our own biorhythms so we can avoid mental issues. Oh, and we also need to not get extinct either, which is our biggest problem today because the psychopaths that rule this world would rather throw the planet into oblivion and kill us all instead of conceding their wealth and power to make the planet flourish and to make everyone free, happy, strong, rich and united.

I guess you can also call this conquering the unknown too, but I've envisioned it as an everlasting problem that just needs a solution each and every time or you will just be stuck in the same place until it's too late.
1) getting "stuck" in one place (if we are talking about actual space, not about evolution) is not bad because humans do need to be stuck in one place (live on inhabitable planets)

2) evolution is always an "everlasting problem" since it forces us to... well. evolve constantly :) ... So, if you look at it like this, it doesn't become a problem anymore, but it's rather just the usual that we do / need to do and which - almost always - we are never aware of since evolution and life happen automatically and at their own paces (most of the time, there are exceptions, of course).

So, I wouldn't think of this as an everlasting problem that needs constant solutions. I mean, challenges and conquering the unknown does need constant solutions, no doubt about it, but as problems I don't see it.

If you feel / think that evolution constitutes a problem I think it's a sign that you're getting old and your body is incapable of adapting anymore, which means that you feel tired of this life / evolution and you feel the getting old rhythms getting hold of you which might be terrifying for most people, but that's the law we're subjected to on this planet: life and death.

This reminds me of one of the quotes of our illustrious Romanian poet, Mihai Eminescu who once said: "caci toti ne nastem sa murim, si murim spre a ne naste.."

Which (more or less) translates to: "... for we all get birthed to die, and then we die to get reborn again...".

In other words, life and death are a cycle on this planet and we're all subject to it whether we like it or not. And with this in mind, feeling that evolution is a problem that needs constant solutions is an accurate statement, but nothing that we should worry / stress about since we're going to be subject to it anyway

I don't know if I would look at it that way. I think you can still be moral and still have a life/timeline in which AI overlords do become the dominant force. I can't reply to this anymore as I'm mentally exhausted. I will try to answer it in the coming days if I don't forget. If I do forget to answer it you can remind me if you care about the answer enough, otherwise we can let it go :)

I have been using chatgpt for about 1 month and words are inadequate about what it has added to my life so far.
At first, I didn't think it would be that useful, but as time passed, I don't even want to talk about how much it broadened my horizons.

There's no scientific basis. No. A copy isn’t necessarily identical in essence. Our unique thoughts, feelings, and experiences still make us distinct.

It's just get started mate. Look at it like a 2 years old baby which can talk like an adult and is being used for many purposes. I think gpt and ai in general are just the tip of the iceberg for what’s coming. It’s not just about broadening horizons (though it’s awesome for that); it’s about how AI is evolving to take on roles that many different technologies handle separately right now. Whether it’s writing, coding, learning, or even managing tasks, AI is becoming this all-in-one tool that’s way more integrated and adaptive than traditional tech. So yeah, I think in the near future, it won’t just be helpful but also it’ll actually replace or combine a lot of tech we use today. Thanks for sharing your thoughts by the way. )

We have to go deep spiritually to understand its possiblities.

I believe that death is not an end, our body is turned into dust after death but our memories and consciosness will be there in our next birth (not necessarility to be human again). We transform into something else, death is a gift by the nature so we dont stay here forever and see the world being destroyes by us.

I believe in nature.. Birth is necessary so does death! This is the nature, if we oppose or offend it, we will get paid for sure!

Nice insight. It's true if we accept we are the smartest creatures in the universe which I highly doubt about it but I agree that death isn’t the end, it’s just part of the natural cycle. And who knows? Maybe we come back as something totally different, could even be a creature smarter than humans! I mean, there’s got to be beings out there that are way ahead of us, right? Birth and death keep the balance, and trying to fight that natural flow just seems like asking for trouble. Nature’s got its own way of keeping things in check.

That’s a really fascinating thought! The idea of uploading our minds or consciousness into a machine is certainly a topic that has been explored in sci-fi for decades. With advancements in AI, brain-computer interfaces, and neuroscience, we’re starting to approach the boundaries of what once seemed impossible.

In theory, AI could play a big role in extending life in several ways, from preserving memories to potentially enhancing cognitive abilities. There are already early-stage technologies exploring the concept of uploading and preserving the brain’s structure and function. However, replicating consciousness—the essence of what makes us who we are—is still a huge unknown. It’s not just about uploading information, but about understanding the nuances of human experience and emotions that form our identity.

The challenge is that AI, while incredibly powerful, doesn’t yet have the capability to fully replicate the complexity of human consciousness or emotions. Plus, there’s the issue of whether a digital copy of a mind would truly be “alive” in the way we understand it. Would it still be you or just a sophisticated simulation?

While we’ve made leaps in AI and biotechnology, immortality still feels like a distant dream. But, who knows? As science progresses, what seems impossible today might one day become a reality. It’s an exciting possibility to think about, though!

Do you mean something like the video game Soma when the world is long gone and they make a copy of your mind to upload it to a satelite to a virtual world so humans can continue living in this virutal world until the satelite stops working, that type of immortality is temporarely until where you memory or you are uploaded stops working.

Won't happen for a long long time. If ever. There will be a limit to technology and I don't think it's anywhere near as far as what you see in Sci-fi. We can't even cure simple viral diseases, stop hair follicles responding to testosterone and many other stuff that is so simple compared to stopping aging or 'transferring' consciousness.
