Instantly. I bought new domain, did a redirect and (after you can see on the graph) I got traffic immediately.

love these sort of experiments. Well done! Even if it fails, you learn so much from them.

it will sometimes recover some of the traffic, but will take all the penalties from the old site to the new one.
clean up the old site by removing harmful backlinks and enhancing content quality before switching. If penalties are huge, it may be better to start with a new domain. If you choose to redirect, monitor the new site's performance closely to gauge its impact and adjust your strategy as needed....
