First of all, I know how to make money, and I’ve never worked a 9-5 job. However, before it even comes to making money, I waste a huge amount of time. Before I make my first $1, I struggle with perfectionism.

I create a website, putting in time, effort, and sweat, only to delete it and start over 2-3 times until I really like it. If I get a new idea, I put my actual project on the sidelines and start working on the new one. At the end, all the sites get finished and generates me a cashflow. But the process drives me crazy.

It’s so hard for me to not obsess over how a site looks, or how to improve it. As a result, I lose 3-6 months on every project.

How the hell do I get rid of this pattern? I really need advice from someone who struggles with this too and managed to fix the problem, or some one who know how to fix it.

PS: The only time i have no idea this pattern exists is, when somebody pays me to get things done.

if you work better under pressure when someone’s paying you? Trick your brain—treat every project like you’ve already got a paying client waiting. Accountability changes the game. Hope this helps!

You need a manager/supervisor or someone who you can trust, to tell you things straight up, direct.
Only then, you can honestly learn, sometimes, getting the work done at a rating of "A-" is still better redoing it 50,000 times to achieve an A+.

Another concept is that, because you have "money", deep down, maybe even subconsciously, you really don't care whether you make money or not since it wouldn't break you.
Try putting something at risk (like losing a job) so you can balance between striving for perfection and striving to get things done as good as possible.

Understand the Root Cause - Your perfectionism might be rooted in fear of judgment or failure.
Shift your focus from “What will people think?” to “How will this help them?”

It shifts your mindset to delivering value, making progress more important than perfection.

this is exactly my situation and I'm so glad I'm not alone. i sometimes manage it by making it a game as if i'm being ordered by the 3rd person singular but it doesn't always work.

I'll share with you my experience (as briefly as I can), as I have a similar experience of yours. I have OCPD (Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder). I realized that I have OCPD really late in my life, but that's okay, as the first step of solving a problem is "Knowing Exactly The Problem".

One of the symptoms is perfectionism, and I'm so fucking obsessed about doing things the perfect way (in my standard of what perfect means to me), and I was even ready to give up something just because I won't make it perfect.

BUT, after a lot of Psy sessions, (about 10 sessions just about OCPD and Perfectionism), my therapist helped me fix some issues about perfectionism. These are the brief of the solutions:

- First, you need to know that the thing you already do is good enough, yeah it might not be perfect, but believe it or not, it's already good. Once you start practicing this self-awareness, you will be good with time.

- I've developed what I called "Updates System". Its idea is so simple: Everything in life, from apps, websites, to humans themselves are into an update system, and everyone is updating. Check this out:

Facebook on 2005: (Also, check the fucking browser, it was like shit, and windows too! lol)

facebook-old.jpeg

Facebook - a huge social media now - wasn't fucking perfect at all, it was simply "a version", and it got updated with time. So, if you wanna start something, just start with version 0 (Why the hell someone would start with version 12 or version 50?), and then update it to version 0.1, and then version 1, and then version 1.1, and then version 13.12 ... you get the point! Version 0 will never be perfect, and you have to be aware of this (Again, self-awareness). This is so common in people who develop apps or websites, they start with Alpha version, and then Beta to test it ... and then launch it, and then update it regularly ...

- Make the-worst-of-it idea: If you're struggling with procrastination (this is too one of the symptoms of OCPD), just try hard to make the-worst-of-it task. For example, I had to write regularly (before even the Ai showed up), I tried to create a habit of writing 500 words per day. Some days I just couldn't make it, and I write the worst 500 words just to finish the task. A day later, when I check that 500 words, I found that it's already good, and maybe just need few adjustments.

That's the side about perfectionism. I tried hard to share all important ideas with you. Here are brief solutions:

- Be fully aware that nothing is perfect, and what you did and what you do is already good (believe it or not)
- If you wanna do something (in your website, or starting a new thing), just fucking start, don't try to start with a good version of it. No one start with a good version, even Facebook didn't start with a good version, so why would you? Just start, and update it with time, that's the beauty of it.
- If you're struggling with procrastination, just try to do the worst thing, and then come back to it later.

Last advice: I recommend reading and applying "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy". It helped me a lot with my obsessive thoughts, and it's also good for perfectionism.

Cheers.

Thank you for being an inspiration!

If you or anyone else is NOT launching a project/service before its "ready", you're doing it very, very wrong.

Launch as soon as you have a stripped back, imperfect but workable solution. Anything other than this and you launched way too late.

This is a simple mindset issue, there is no trick. Just launch. This is how business works. Accept that.
