In New Jersey, where I grew up we had something called a Jersey Hot Dog.
There are variations of the name, Jersey Dog, New Jersey Italian Hot Dog, Newark Style Dog, etc.
I don't recall every eating one in Newark but I rarely went to Newark... it is best off of a food truck anyway.
Large Italian bread style roll is the "holder of the goods"... the size being about 1/2 the length of a normal sub roll (total length about 6 inches). Typically this is presented in a thick Pita pocket but the roll will work nicely.
You hollow that out so you have room for what does in there.
One Brat instead of a Dog (actually 2 dogs are in this meal normally) in this instance as we have fresh ones from the butcher calling my name.
Sauteed onions, yellow and red peppers (green ones are a little bitter so no go) are a staple in a Jersey Dog.
Grilled potato chunks, not huge sizes as you want to be able to eat them as part of your experience. I use baby potatoes for this but you can use a Russet one if you prefer. I par boil them as that works best for this.
Seasonings for the above, salt and pepper on all, Italian seasoning on the potatoes with some oregano.
Red Relish which I make myself (not standard on a Jersey Dog) but adds to help make flavor profile a little bit different yet still in line with the other vegetables.
Sauerkraut - leaving that out would bring me the wrath of the Italian Hot Dog community.
Yellow mustard... not the fancy mustard, just plain yellow mustard.
I also have a container with beer, onions and peppers in it and kept very hot so once the Brat is cooked, I can put it in there for 30 or so seconds and then back on the grill for 30 seconds.
I tell my wife this AM that I'm going to do that today and she says, "You sure spent a lot of time thinking that through, didn't you?".
My response, "You think I'm back there working?. I'm back there thinking up alternatives to food we like, it's much more Important that working!"
