Sorry... I understand now. Our discussion here has been on the basis of not believing everything google spoon feeds us. Rather to judge based on results and real life experiences.

Interesting, I also think that you shouldn't bother at all with nofollow links.
On the other hand, I am not sure about wikipedia, do you think that wikipedia nofollow links are worth it?

I don't know the definative answer regarding how google includes nofollow links in it's algorithms. I will tell you that as far as both PR and SERPs are concerned, google has made an effort to have nofollow be an important factor. I'm sure they are pretty serious about what they say about it.

That doesn't mean it doesn't look at them at all, it absolutely doesn't mean the crawler doesn't follow them, but they don't carry much value if any to help your ranking in either the SERP or for PR.

But there are other considerations to think of. If you are adding backlinks for the sole purpose of seo, then you're skipping the true purpose of backlinks. The very idea of not wanting a backlink on wikipedia because it's a nofollow is ridiculous. That single inclusion in wikipedia could get you tons of real traffic. It can also give other webmasters the impression that your website carries some weight and so you might start getting some organic backlinks from them as well.

Absolutely you should be making backlinks in an effort to get a better listing in google. You should definately be looking for higher pr D0follow links from relevant sites to get the best results for both SERP position and PR. At the same time there are good backlinks from nofollow sites that can really be good for your overall site promotion. Remember google may be King, but it isn't God! There are many other traffic sources that should be sought out other than just the search engines. THANK YOU!!! It drives me freaking nuts when people talk like what Google wants/counts is the ONLY thing to take into consideration when doing offsite SEO. My sites get an average of about 35% of their traffic from google. That means that 65% is coming from SOMEWHERE ELSE. If I only optimized for Google, there's a chance I might miss out on that 65%.

That's so true also. Linking for visitors is good. The other poster noted that most of his traffic is from links on other pages, and not from google.

A little experiment was done several months ago:

Took a brand new site, did nothing but comments that had nofollow for the site. Results: Primary site stayed the same, but all the other pages rose from being in the 100s up to being in page 1 and 2. All that from nofollow links. Think about what impact that has on your own sites long tail ranking.

It appears there are a lot of people in the world wearing tinfoil hats. Dailyseotips thought comments Matt Cutts tried to make about nofollow was bullocks, and so did a few over at seomoz just to name a few examples. Search this very forum and you will find several of the most knowledgeable contributors here sporting tinfoil hats also in regards to what google says vs what google does.

Once again with the last few commentary, we arrived at the same conclusion as before... ALL LINKS MATTER.

It all boils down to what your trying to accomplish.

If all you care about is your position in the search engines then by all means ignore anything that doesn't help toward that goal.

But if your goal is to get traffic, then you need to consider a lot more than just seo. A lot of the most popular viral type sites succeeded with absolutely no seo whatsoever. Most IM type sites aren't likely to go viral, but if you want to succeed it would be ridiculous to not study the type of things that can make that happen.

I think some links devalued one of my sites in serps though. I blasted it with xrumer for about 200 profile links and next week, i went from page 1 to page 2.

I think that is more a matter of link velocity than a like devaluing.

I say no follow links are important too.

They might not bring the link juice but -

1. they still bring traffic
2. only do follow links will appear unnatural to google.
3. every link counts!
