Even though this is a relatively old thread, and OP haven't been online in a while, I think some members could benefit from this so I'm happy to share my experience in this niche.
When you're running in a competitive local industry, be it garage door, locksmith, appliance repair or cleaning, you must put your efforts in a few different key places (beyond the obvious like, choosing good and keywords (both local and general) and structure them in a way that makes sense):
1. Ad creative: be as specific as you can, use DKI and location macros to encourage Google to show your ads over others' and at a better price.
If a user from Melbourne searched for "house cleaning service" you'll get more clicks with a headline like "House Cleaning in Melbourne" than with "Residential Cleaning Near You".
2. LP optimization: add social proof (reviews on Google, TP, and anywhere else - if you have a widget showing your clients' locations with pictures, even better!), and the city to the headline, consider adding the keyword as well if it makes sense (can be done automatically).
If a user from Adelaide searches for "house cleaning service", a headline like "House Cleaning Service in Adelaide" would work a lot better than "Residential Cleaning Service You Can Count On" or anything like that.
3. Report conversions in a way that makes sense in the context of your actual business goal. Every monkey can set up calls and leads conversions (by the way, call tracking is a must!), but if you want to step up your game, fire conversions for paying clients and optimize for that instead of for leads. You might pay a bit more per lead, but increase your close rate and average LTV, lowering your CAC and improving your ROI significantly. You can take it a step further and report your gross profit back to Google to prioritize bigger projects over smaller ones.
All the above is backed by tons of tests, and I'd be happy to elaborate more if anyone has a question or wants more info.
