Hostile takeover attempt. This is insane.

I don’t know how this thing will play out but from what I’ve seen it just seems like Matt is constructing a perfect coffin for himself. He seems like a kid that has been given control of a multi million dollar business and he has absolutely no idea how to handle it. None whatsoever.

I looked in to it too and there are no rumours any later than 2018 (which is even earlier than the time Google actually and seriously were thinking of buying Shopify) and the response to the rumour was by mullenweg was: “The good news is that Google can’t buy WordPress…because WordPress is not a company or thing that can be bought…”
Fast forward 6 years and I think a good lawyer might be able to make him eat his words.

Just a little update on this, which I noticed today -

Matt has decided to pause the "free services" offered by WordPress.org as per this post. You can also see that he cannot help but add in another dig to WP Engine at the bottom.

Former CEO of Yoast has responded asking for a federated approach to WordPress.org being introduced, so that the community isn't reliant on a single person stearing the direction of WordPress and I think this makes a lot of sense, although he likely it is to happen, I don't know -
